Looking into getting some TV speakers.

Recently I decided I wanted to invest a small amount of money into a decent pair of active speakers for my TV.  My budget is 200 and under, and I've been looking into the BX5A the most.  Would these be a viable pair of TV speakers?  My TV only has RCA in the back, and I've also heard the BX5A are hard to control volume wise.  I'd like to place the speakers close against a wall too, but I've heard the BX5A are back-ported and want some space behind them?  Anyways, if anybody has any recommendations for a pair of active ones used for a TV under 200usd, please comment away.

Most active monitors perform best near field or at least somewhat close and not deployed for living room/HT duty typically so in your shoes i would either hit amp + bookshelf + sub or a pair of decent floor standers tongue_smile.gif In the USA Craiglist is an awesome source for no frills used stereo amps/avrs

Yeah, I agree that nearfields are not ideal. I have the bamboo A5s and love them in a TV application. I realize the A5s are out of the budget. The A2s would work well in a small LR and both (A2 and A5) are RCA in. The A2s have a "bass-slot" on the front.

Is the whole nearfield thing an issue with imaging and accuracy, or just volume output?  I'm in a smaller apartment, and the living room itself is around 12x14, and the distance from the speakers to chairs would be around 10 feet or so.

When you mention the A2s, do you mean the audioengine A2s?  Bamboo A5/A2 didn't yield any results.  Other recommendations for floor standers?  I don't really want to go the receiver route, or get a sub.

A 2.1 system is generally better for tv and film, the logitech z623 , edifer s330 / c3.

if you still want monitors then look at the prodipe pro 5.

Well is there a fundamental difference between the monitors and these 2.1 systems?  I've heard a lot of low-key logitech and bose 2.1 systems and the subwoofers are extremely bloated compared to the rest of the spectrum, so it drives me away, and there's always a hole around the 100-200hz mark.  The midrange is never as clear as it could be either.  However if there's a cheap 2.1 system with a sub that doesn't intrude and a powerful lower midrange, I'm all for it.

The cheap 2.1 systems are no where as good as proper monitors, but watching tv and films a cheap 2.1 system does a lot better than monitors at this job there just more fun and exciting than monitors. If you want 1 with proper midrange and a proper crossedover sub then look at edifiers range the s330 or c3 or m3300 or for a bit more the s530.

Are those 2 inch midrange drivers going to produce the same type of full sound as the studio monitors?  I find it hard to believe they'd fill a room up better than the 4inch midrange drivers of the monitors.  I'm not really after the low bass of a subwoofer from a 2.1 system, I'm just looking for an overall better sound to my TV ranging from movies to games to music to regular cable.  I'd also like the audio clarity for voices over anything else, to avoid having to turn the volume up too loud and potentially disturbing neighbors.  So I guess in my case, it's either active monitors, bookshelf speakers or floor standers.

Maybe you'd prefer the edifier rt1900.

You seem pretty confident in the Edifiers.  Is there anything they do considerably better over the AudioEngines for this purpose?  Where can I find a site to order them if I wanted?

The edifiers are cleaner/clearer sounding in the mids and bass and extend lower, the a2's have mid bass hump which makes them sounda bit muddy .

Where should I be looking to get them?  It turns out I was a bit misinformed about the woofer size of the A2s as well, it turns out they're a little under 3 inches in diameter compared to 4 inches, which might pose a problem for creating an effortless low volume full sound.

I dunno amazon , ebay , where ever you shop also try google product search, I think the a2's woofers are 2.75" the edifiers are 5" , so yes the edifier's have a better low end at any volume also here there almost half the price of the a2's.

Sadly, only their 2.1 systems show up on the internet for me-- wherever I look.

I would get the A2, as it fits all my requirements, but I am still troubled over whether or not it'll give me enough of a full sound at low volumes.  I don't think there's a question if it gets loud enough or not.  I never put my TV's speakers above 1/5th volume, and they're 20watts total.  The A2 are 60watts total.  Are there any other active 2.0 systems with 4 inch midrange drivers that are under 200usd?

The Mackie MR5 is another one I've been looking at, and sorta fit the bill (have a bass port in the back, though)
