Ipod dock speakers humming

I have this product from wharfdale:

http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/mp3-accessories/wharfedale-ipod-hifi-speaker-system.asp

Anyway it's been a long time since i got them as a present but on the back of the speakers it says:

Input: 12V ------ 2.0A
It also says DC under where the socket on the speakers for the mains (even though on the web page it says AC, I am in Ireland and we use the same mains as the UK).

However the plug I have for it says the following:
Input:220-240VAC 50Hz 150mA
Output: 12.0VDC 1000mA

The hum is a constant hum, loud enough to notice in the room if there is no music playing and is constant regardless of volume or whether music is playing or not. I have tried using a different mains outlet but it had no effect, and the plug is 3 pronged.

From research I think the problem is that the speakers are not grounded? But i'm no whiz at electronics but it should already be grounded if it has a 3 prong plug?

Any help would be appreciated as it's driving me crazy.

It does sound like a grounding problem.  Perhaps the outlet you are using is not properly grounded.  Try a different outlet in a different location when you can and test if the hum goes away.  If it does then it was most likely a bad ground on the outlet you originally tested it on.

Perhaps you are using the wrong power supply to power the unit?  Are you sure the power supply ( plug in ) for the unit is the one that came with it?

If the speakers and the main unit have different plugs then be sure to plug them into the same outlet otherwise you can get ground loop feedback.
