"Reference" is another one of those terms which could mean anything when it comes to quality. In sound studios "reference" often mean the absolute worst possible speakers which can be found, Auratones for example. They are designed to represent a worst case scenario, if you can get your mix to sound acceptable on Auratones you know that it'll be acceptable on even the worst consumer equipment. Also though, if you have a very high quality calibrated monitor system in one room, this will be used as the "reference" for other rooms. In other words, "reference" can mean the very best, very worst or sometimes in between. See, I told you it can mean anything!
