Stuttering audio on Youtube.Itunes,Winamp but not Foobar2000 with wasapi in Vista

Thread Starter

I have been having this stuttering audio problem on youtube.com or any software player[Itunes,Winamp etc.] except Foobar2000 with wasapi in Vista. My laptop is an older Dell Inspiron 1505 with 2gigs ram,ATI graphics and wirelessN ...I have tried the following: updating sata drivers, wireless drivers, usb.sigmatel audio drivers.DPC.Latency Untitled.jpg

Checker shows some  red spikes as above image shows.I tried to disable drivers one by one  in device manager but had no joy.

I have reverted back to an earlier time by using a Acronis Image backup which corrects the problem until I install any update which causes a reoccurence of the stuttering problem.

As I said Foobar2000 plays audio perfectly using wasapi which seems very weird to say the least.. Does anyone have any ideas why I am having this problem? I do not want to deep six the laptop yet.

I was thinking about getting an enternal  USB DAC/headphone amp but this would be a big disappointment with this stuttering issue

Thanks very much.

P.S. Using  the Dell Media Direct partition outside of Windows Vista plays DVDs and CDs with perfect audio!

I'm bumping this because I experience the exact same issues under Win 7 with my set up.  I experience no issues at all under Linux with the same set up (I dual boot), but the only cure for my ills on Win 7 is to use Foobar2000 and wasapi.

This could be due to sample rate mismatch between hardware/driver settings and the audio source.

In Win 7, you have to make sure sample rates match in 3 places: hardware (driver), Win 7 (audio properties), and software app.  If your hardware is capable of 24/96, or similar, Win 7 may be doing sample rate conversion on the fly for 16/44 audio.  WASAPI automatically matches sample rates, hence the reason you have no problem.   But as far as I know, browsers and iTunes don't use WASAPI, rather, they use the generic plug-n-play driver.

An aside: I think there is a way to get iTunes to use WASAPI.  I think you have to go in to QuickTime settings to do this.
