I think it's time to upgrade my headphones.

I've recently purchased a XONAR DG and some JVC RX700 and absolutely adore them, but I got a new job which pays fairly good so why not upgrade my headphones right? lol.

I love my RX700 but I don't really think it has enough bass for the "type" of music I listen to which are; dubstep, trance, electro, indie, power pop, punk pop, alternative, and hiphop.

As for my budget, I would like to keep it around the $100 range. I want something that can produce a clean, punchy, powerful type of bass, none of that muddyness here.

After doing some research it seems like a lot of people recommend Audio Technica ATH-M50 which are slightly above my price range but if it's worth it, then i'll purchase them. Just want to get a few other opinions before I make a purchase.

Also I know some headphones come with a coiled cable (ATH-M50) and I was wondering if that has ever bothered anyone weight wise.

Oh and a lot of people seem to be recommending Ultrasone headphones to me but I've never really heard of this brand.

One more thing, are their any stores where I could test these headphones out at? I live in the southern california area.

The RX700 are terrific for the price, I upgraded my $200 Denon D2000s to the RX700, however if you consider even more bass an upgrade you may prefer the D2000. The sound signature is very close.

With a budget around $100 I wouldn't know what to suggest, Denon D1100 are very bass heavy, as are Ultrasones HFI-580. The M50 is boring, it's a monitoring headphone for producing/mastering, I wouldn't consider it for music on a daily bases. All the above phones are sidesteps, if you want an upgrade you would be looking more towards the Sennheiser HD600 and Beyerdynamic DT880 with the addition of an amp.

Have you tried modding your RX700? ~ Brings out some more bass!

Heya,

This is the headphone for you: Fischer Audio FA-011.

Check out reviews on it. It's got great bass. It's sweet looking. It's so close to your budget.

Very best,

Thanks for your imput! I was looking for something with a lil more casual look to them though so that I could wear them in public, but I will definitely keep those in mind.

There also seems to be a lot of Ultrasone headphones all within the same price range. I don't know which one to choose.

Which one would best suit my needs?

Also, a lot of people seem to not be recommending the ATH-M50. Why is that? I thought they're supposed to be extremely great for the price.

M50's used to be the goto recommendation, but they've been outed a bit from what I've seen from the trend.

I've listened to the 580, and I'd recommend those. Bought my friend a set of those as a gift, and being a basshead, he's been in love with them since. Always easier to just stick with the tried and true. I believe the DJ1's, though, are almost exactly like the HFI-580 with difference in the build.
