Equipment Stand Recommendations - Page 3

I am still leaning toward marble or the composite slabs for the amps. I think I will wander up to Home Depot one of these days and see what scraps they have up there. The other source is the installers they always have pieces laying around. So many choices for the equipment rack though.

BTW the amps were delivered to me at work today. A listening session is planned for Saturday.

edit: Maple has moved way up on the list especially after I remembered that I have a supply of it in the garage.

Goodluck John. Marble should be fine as long as you bond some MDF or something to deaden it. Tell us how it goes!

I like the Mapleshade Sampson racks but for your amps I recommend that you use the Mapleshade cone points and have two custom maple platforms contructed by a local vendor. I have found bucther blocks(constructed of rock maple) to work great with amps and other tube gear. I'll post pick of my Dad's VTL amps sitting on two 4" thick blocks sitting on brass cone feet. It looks hella-trick and sounds great.

John,

I have the Salamander Synergy racks. They looks gorgeous, but aren't exacxtly what I would call rigid. Don't make a similar mistake.

edit: add. If going the homebrew route, I would use granite instead of marble. Just get yourself two big slabs, get three pointy cone deals for each and you're set. I have a bunch of solid machines cone feet left over from the PowerDAC project. I'd say they're about 1.5" tall and 3-4" diameter at the wide part. A little scratched up, but should work well. I assume you're just going to have the Amta-Spheres basically sit on the floor.

Bond MDF to the marble/granite to deaden it? Could you please explain what this would help?

They're afraid that the marble will resonate. I think it depends on how thick your slab is. By binding MDF to it, you dampen the marble, changing its resonate frequency.

A better way to go, in my mind anyway, is to basically build a little sandbox that sits on pointy feet. Then just lie the granite/marble slab on the sand.

Okay I am not hijacking your thread just one quick question....why buy an expensive audio stand instead of some cheapo shelves at Ikea?

Well since I will have a few dollars invested in this system by the time I finish I would like it to be esthetically pleasing. While there is nothing wrong with Ikea's products I do not think they will fit in with the rest of my house or the equipment.

Secondly I do not think they are the most stable nor will they isolate the equipment.

Those Mapleshade Sampson racks that Tuberoller linked us to are beautiful! Next time I have a spare $850..... Something else to add to my wish book. Sigh.

I currently have a Sanus rack for my equipment but I'm not too pleased with it - doesn't seem as solid as I would like - it's one of their Natural Furniture series. Looks pretty, but I wish I had saved the $$ to put towards the Sampson rack instead!

Let us know what you decide upon, john_jcb - you definitely need something to do justice to those beautiful amps.

I think the main thing is whether you believe in isolataion and resonance control systems. If you don't, buy something that is either the cheapest or looks the nicest.

I definitely will.

Maybe I will spread the stuff around the living room on pieces of plywood. After a couple of days my wife will get mad at the clutter and my budget will be increased. There have been some very good suggestions and I may go on a jaunt to the various stores to see some of the stuff in person. One of the benefits of living near Chicago.

John, you should check out the 4 and 5 shelf versions of the Atlantis Reference audio racks. Here is a link (you might be able to find a better price somewhere):

http://www.value-audio.com/racks.htm Scroll down a bit to see the Reference series, and look at the rosewood color in the image beneath this. I got the Brandy color (pictured) but was disappointed that they were much more 'orange-ish' than is shown in the pics.

When I did my search for racks a couple of years ago, this is what I came up with - the Atlantis rack in rosewood (or so I wish now that I have the brandy). 1) it's a great looking piece of furniture, 2) it's fillable and the shelves and legs are adjustable, so no problems at all with stability, 3) it's affordable given that it looks so nice and performs so well in terms of isolation.
