DAP Advice desperately needed!

Hi all, I am new to the forum.

After having my trusty Sansa e250 and my beautiful Sennheiser PX 100 II's being crushed under the tire of a car  frown.gif, I need to build up myself a new portable rig. I am planning to get myself something which is a fair amount more decent.

I am getting some Sennheiser HD 598 headphones, and I am still looking around for what portable amp I am going to get. I listen to classical music, and strictly lossless formats only, generally FLAC, so larger storage spaces are preferred.

But the huge problem I am having is choosing a suitable DAP!

Now, I would like something that has true line out functionality. I love the Cowon J3, and it is perfect, except for the fact that I don't think you can get true line out from it. Would the HP out on the J3 be sufficient quality, and would they actually drive the 598's well? Even if it did, I would still like to have the flexibilty of having the option of line out.

Then I looked at some Ipod Classics, but the new ones don't have Wolfson DACs, so what is the point. (I would have rock boxed it).

The Zune HD's and Sony X1060's look awesome, but do not support FLAC, which is a must for me. Do these have line out functionality by the way?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks.

Hello to you too, welcome to the forums and sorry about your wallet.

I can only answer the question about ony X Series and its lineout. It does have this capability and there are lots of good quality LODs on eBay, Fiio sell one too.

Indeed, although the problem with the Sony is no FLAC support! :( How could they do that..... Otherwise it would have been almost perfect.

Same goes with the Cowon j3, but I am worried about a lack of LOD functionality with it. I do like what I am hearing about its eq'ing though, sounds good.

The S:Flo also seems quite nice, but that falls short terribly in terms of battery life, and software etc. Anyone have any experience with these? Is the line-out on it good quality for external amplification?

Thank you for your suggestion. At the moment, I am intent on the Sennheiser HD 598's, coupled with a Fiio E11.

(I listen only to classical music)

In terms of my portable source, it has been narrowed down to the following for me:

Cowon J3 VS. Ipod 7G Classic 160Gb

Cowon J3:

Pros for me: High SQ, good EQ possibilities, Decent power, long lasting battery, native support of lossless formats like FLAC.

Cons for me: No Line-out or LOD functionality for use with external amp. I would essentially have to resort to using the HP out. Although the players SQ may compensate for it.

Ipod 7G Classic:

Pros for me: Large storage space, SQ (I have not heard much about it?), LOD functionality.

Cons for me: I would have to Rockbox it to get the FLAC support which I require. I am not the hugest fan of the Rockbox UI, although it is nothing too serious.

Now I wonder, could anybody point out to me which would be better in terms of SQ:

The Ipod with LOD -> Fiio E11 -> Senn HD 598

Or the Cowon through HP out ->  Fiio E11 -> Senn HD 598 (Would the Cowons SQ compensate here?)

Also I here of things like some Ipod generations not supporting "true line-out" functionality, meaning that basically the signal coming from the LOD is not completely untouched and straight from the DAC. Now where does the 7G fit into this? Also, what do others think of the Cirrus featured in the 7th Gen Ipod classics?

Thank you all for any criticism and help.
