Build a newbie's setup, not high budget

So after enjoying my headphones for a while I've decide I want a speaker setup. I'm a total noob however when it comes to speakers, so I will need some help from the experts here around head fi. Some info:

-budget around 700$. Also, I have no DAC. I guess I need it so this will have to fit in the budget. Also, I have no amp.

-Will be playing from my pc.

-I listen almost exclusively to electronic genres, so I need BASS. The rest of the spectrum must be good aswell ofcourse

-The speakers will be in my bedroom, so I have some space limitations.

Also, I have no clue on what cables etc. I need so I will probably need some help on that too :).

Thanks in advance for any help!

You would be told to look into a HSU or SVS Sub if you stopped by AVSForum. Then you have $200 for the receiver and about $200 left for speakers.............so you'd have to get something like Polk or Dayton or Energy. You can get a Dayton sub from partsexpress, supposed to be decent and spend more on the speakers if you want.

What about Swan?

O_o where would be your listening position i.e right in front of your PC or all the way at your bed for example tongue_smile.gif For near field you can go active monitors or passive + T-amps

JBL 4311's are amazing speakers...very accurate and can put out some deep, clean bass to around 40Hz. Highly recommend them. I have 4 in my main stereo setup and 7 in my home theater.

JBL 4311 seem like some nice speakers, but they also seem pretty big. What are their dimensions? As I said i have quite some limitations in space.

Sometimes I will probably be in my bed, but it's not like "all the way at my bed" :P, its pretty close to my desktop where the speakers will be.

Well in your shoes i'd hit some small, efficient and cool running T-amp and a pair of generally good musical bookshelfs that are currently selling at a bargain tongue_smile.gif

Perhaps

Dayton DTA-100A $99

Infinity Primus P162 $150/pair

http://www.stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/1007inf/

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/bookshelf/infinity-primus-p162

then decide if a subwoofer is needed?

That dayton looks to be a great deal.  Most speakers with an 8" woofer and up probably will not need a sub unless you're a serious basshead.  My T-amp (a Pop Pulse 35W one, quite powerful) can drive my big bookshelf speakers to very high volumes cleanly.

My puny little TA2020 for near field PC Audio duty screams with somewhat efficient (89dB) bookshelf and this Dayton has a lot more beef L3000.gif But ya can't tell if TS is an extreme basshead hehe My feeling is with half decent bookshelfs and small bedrooms, subs aren't a must beerchug.gif

Try these speakers for $50 more, http://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Monitor-One-Mk2-speakers/dp/B0002A2RTU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1315085069&sr=8-2 , there pair well with a t-amp because there easy to drive, 88db 1watt @ 1metre and 4ohms , there rated down to 45hz -3db so you might not need a sub, they handle most genres well because there very netruel accurate theres no boosted highs, mids or bass, You won't find anything better at this price range read the reviews on amazon.

Hmm that dayton looks good. I live in Europe however so i will have to find a shop that ships to Europe for not too much money. I am a bit of a basshead, but i can just buy the speakers then decide if i need a subwoofer. Those Alesis speakers look good, but I will have to look if they fit. Any other suggestions? I have been looking at Audioengine A2 lately, are they good?

Id avoid the a2's for bassy music, they roll off past 150hz and have a huge frequence peak of around +6db 200hz-150hz to composate for lack of a true low-end the result is muddy bass with no extension, they also just sound rubbish compared to the alesis's.

IMHO stuff like the A2 are overpriced when compared to the SQ a decent pair of bookshelf speakers can belt out but i understand their attractiveness as an all in one/ready made solution tongue_smile.gif
