Does it really matter or are they equal?

 

Even if technically there is a difference, could the human ear hear it in actual use?

The only reason to use the balanced input over the unbalanced input is if you have a true-balanced (dual differential) source component, in which case using it balanced will sound better. No real difference otherwise.

 

Balanced operation will also boost the effective volume/gain relationship too, assuming the source has proper balanced output (double the voltage of the RCA output).
