I wanted to get one of the high end open models, but I hear that everyone and their mom can hear what you're listening to. frown.gif Of course people here are listing the one I wanted as one of their top headphones period, which is making it harder on me.

I actually do live on an Island and before I moved here I needed to ask myself that very question. I did arrive with 4 headphones. The good part is I can get more but have to jump on a plane to do it. It really takes a while to know what you could really live with if that was it. You also seem to start to enjoy your music and get off the upgrade bus once you know that electronics are far away.

I have 2 pair of AKG k701s. One pair as back-up.

I have 1 pair of Denon AH-D7000s

I have one pair of  Sony MDR-CD-870s

That's it.

DT990s (simply my favorite)

K271s

UM3Xs

MDR7506 (beaters)

If I ever have a chance to try T1s - who knows but it's these for now

I had to think about this one for a while but:

Shure SRH840s

Ultrasone Pro 900s

HiFiMan HE-500s

Grado SR-80is

I think that would probably give me a nice mix of open, balanced, bassy, and all arounds to listen to for eternity.

Grado GS1000i

Alessandro MS Pro

Audio Technica Ath-AD700, very nice treble clarity with excellent soundstage and positioning. Great for 1980s new wave like Gary Numan and John Foxx (Ultravox) aswell as classical music. They're so comfortable i dont even know am wearing them. With my Onkyo TX-8555 stereo reciever i can also feel a good amount of balanced bass but probably nothing that would satisfy bass lovers. Sound isolation is just about non-existent so best played in quiet environments or at night if you dont have anyone near you.

Koss Pro-4AA, grew up with the original version in the 1970s and they were the first headphones i used to play computer games on. Got the new version this year and am enjoying the extreme detail and amazing directional positioning in audio. I can actually feel myself turning in a game as the sound shifs from one ear to the next in silky smooth stereo. They are retro looking and heavy but they're the most enjoyable soundwise for me. Sound isolation is good thanks to the weight comfortable fit for a fat head like me :)

Koss UR-40, another crystal clear treble based headphone which is great for gaming. I have both the titanium driver and older non-titanium driver versions and they both sound great with the newer titanium drivers giving much more bass. Very comfortable and just like the Ath-AD700 i never know am wearing them. Sound isolation from the outside is also decent.

Sony MDR-XB500, amazing on the spot bass which i can feel when playing games like SUPREME COMMANDER 2 as my giant robot stomps across the battlefield. Using the equalizer to raise the treble some the MDR-XB500 sound very balanced with plenty of bassy warmth which doesnt overpower. Sound isolation from the outside is excellent thanks to the very comfortable pillow like ear pads.

1) My modded Grado SR1125

2) HifiMan HE-5LE  atsmile.gif

3) Sleek Audio SA-6 (Orig)-with Comply tips

4) Ultimate Ears UE-700-with Comply tips

In No particular order- HE-5LE's are my favorite all-time headphones, I'm 53 and they are the nicest sounding headphones I have owned to date. Good thread!!!!!
