Hello all I just got a new Acer Aspire laptop today and I have a few questions regarding it's sound output. It's a good spec computer but it has one draw back. It is running realtek hd audio. First impressions are that the audio quality is absolute trash. So I plugged in my Fiio E7 and it made a difference. Is it possible it's not the audio card because the quality is so unbearable it doesn't make sense. this computer cost much more then my Toshiba which has conexent hd audio and the Toshiba sounds tons better.

Also does anyone have experience on how good the sound on Acer laptops are. Also how reliable are Acer machines overall.

This laptop was given to me as a gift so it isn't the best out there and I didn't choose it. It was a very late grad gift.

Err even those on desktop motherboards with the highest end Realtek ALC 89X find the simple addition of that Fiio E7 a significant jump so i can only imagine how it could be for laptop onboard sound tongue_smile.gif If u just sticking to cans all the way that Fiio E7 for starters is a great choice and when u have demanding cans add in an E9 and you could drive just about anything there hehe Even if you thinking speakers buy the L7 line out kit and use the E7 as a USB DAC

Well, I'm probably in the minority but I love Acer laptops.  I currently own 3 (2x Vista & 1x W7) & 1 netbook (7 Starter).  Two I have had over three years, one over two years and the netbook over a year I believe.  I originally purchased because they all have digital out (spdif- optical) except the Netbook.  I mostly use them for audio, but they get used for everyday purposes as well.  Never had any problems with them no matter the crapload of music and video software I put on them.  They take a grind and keep on going.

All in my opinion of course.  That being said, I never listen without an external DAC, so can't comment on onboard sound (only brief initial testings).  What I did find out though is that with that hd audio card, no ks (kernel streaming) is available.  WASAPI does work though (this applies only to hd onboard sound, with external DACs you get ks, wasapi etc.).

Cheers

So, it was a gift? Then keep it. Otherwise, run from that brand as the devil runs from the cross.

They are notorious for their acceptable hardware and very little to no build quality and quality control. To be avoided at all costs.

Do you have personal experience? My Acer Netbook is 2 years old, I treat it like trash (throw it around, ect) and it still works. I am just curious if they are still solid or if their laptops are any different.

Yes, I do have personal experience with several Acer laptops, and only 1 didn't have issues, be it hardware wise or external plastics. A netbook is quite light compared with notebooks, and that does help a bit when it's handled a bit on the rough side, which you should avoid doing anyway.

Fair enough. Most techies who work with computers say the opposite though. A friend of mine fixes laptops and he said he sees remarkably few acers while he is over loaded with hp and dell. Aver dell and hp are the best selling laptop brands in canada and he rarely sees acer. he said over the last few years acer has stepped up their reliability. and my friend has an acer laptop he just replaced after 5 years of working.

Be it as it may, recently, 3 Acer laptops less than 1 year old all showed issues, 1 with external plastic breaking and the other 2 with hardware failures. I should add that they all came from different places.

I could make the association of Acer with Monster, but that won't be necessary since I already mentioned Acer's build quality and quality control issues.

So, if you're planning on keeping that laptop, good luck.

I've been using a Sony VGN-A190 since it came out (about 10 years) and only had issues with viruses. Still runs fine but I wanted to get an upgrade to handle today's software. It was made to be a multimedia center with optical out, AD & DA, S-video i/o, VGA out, RCA i/o.. Compared to a 15 yr old DAC, the computer is pretty bad. I use a HiFace USB-coax converter and avoid the computer circuits.

Nothing but good experience with Acer budget products.
