How to avoid the 'pop'

Thread Starter

I got my first amp (Schiit Asgard), and I hear a horrible 'pop' when I plug in my headphones, turn off the amp while headphones are plugged in, etc.

I figured out the best way to stop is to unplug the headphones, and then turn off the amp (to avoid the pop); but what about starting? I've tried different approaches (plugging in while on, plugging it while off, ...) but can't avoid that pop!

Each time I hear it, it feels like I'm hurting my headphones :( Some help would be appreciated, thanks!

Here's what I do with my Lyr:

1.) Turn on the amp while making sure the volume is at zero (without headphones).

2.) Wait 20 seconds or so.

3.) Plug in my headphones.

4.) Turn up the volume and enjoy.

To turn off,

1.) Turn off music source.

2.) Turn volume to zero.

3.) Unplug my headphones.

4.) Turn off the amp.

just a question, does the pop damage the amp or headphone in any way? I also have similar pops when turning on/off my M-stage matrix with HD650

That depends on the nature of the pop and the magnitude.  Large DC voltage output to many headphones is not good for them and could damage them.  Larger magnitude and longer duration are both bad.  However, the kind of turn on/turn off transients you get with most devices (if they have one that's audible) isn't going to be a concern with most all headphones.

As for the OP, the Schiit Asgard is somewhat well known for having this issue.  There was a thread earlier about this, but...it's probably better not to take anything at face value that's said in that thread, except maybe the video in the OP.  Suffice to say, Schiit has now acknowledged it's an issue, and you can send your amp in to install a relay to mitigate the issue, if you so desire.  (That's if your amp is the older version without the relay.  Maybe new ones they're selling already have it installed?  I am not very familiar with the story.)

The video speaks for itself.  Also see here:
