When I was a kid on the school bus, I'd listen to that tape on my Koss walkman with the bass boost turned on.  *woowooowooowooowooowooo*  I would try to make this girl I had a crush on listen to it, but she was having no part of it, said it was stupid, she'd rather listen to MC Hammer...  Oh the late 80's/early 90's, sigh...

If you search youtube for "and justice for jason" you'll find some tracks with "the original bass" added back in, I'm not sure that it's the bass tracks that Jason recorded, so I'd take it with a grain of salt, still interesting though.

Ride The Lightning - As fast as Kill 'em All, but a bit better production, which detracts from the rawness that I really like about Kill 'em All, but still a great album.

Master Of Puppets - Way more produced, longer songs, almost prog at points, mostly due to Cliff's love of BOC, at times the album seems directionless, still good though.

Garage Days Re-revisited - First album with Jason on bass, some really good covers of Diamond Head, Budgie, and the Misfits.

...And Justice For All - It's an intense angry album, but the production is crap (bass guitar was removed from the mix, and the bass knob on the guitar was turned up), I've been listening to this album since I was a kid, still love it, despite it's flaws.

their other albums aren't really metal, Saint Anger and Death Magnetic are borderline emo records, they done fell off.

If you like Kill 'em All, then check out Megadeth:

Killing Is My Business - you'll notice that many songs sound like Kill 'em All, that's because Dave Mustaine wrote those songs, and then was kicked out of Metallica.  Four Horsemen was originally called Mechanix, but before Dave was kicked out, they renamed it and wrote new lyrics, they also slowed it down.  Mechanix destroys Four Horsemen in my eyes.

Peace Sells, But Who's Buying - better production, great songs, shows a lot of growth as a band

So Far, So Good, So What - SKIP THIS ALBUM!  This is a pretty rough album, bad covers, bad songs, Dave was doing a bunch of heroin (as well as the rest of the band) and it shows.

Rust In Peace - Great great great album, awesome songs, that are technical while not being a wank fest.

Keep enjoying bud!

This. First 4 Metallica albums are great, all for different reasons. Kill Em All for its raw, violent energy, Ride The Lighting for more of the same but some slow songs added too, Master Of Puppets for something more complex and Justice For All for more of the same. :D Black album (self titled) took a direction to more comercial sound. Not a bad album, easy to listen but really quite unremarkable and very overrated. Load and Reload is mostly just Hard Rock. Not bad, but quite a dissapointment considering this is legendary Metallica we are talking about.

Avoid S/T Anger, that album is complete piece of crap! Terrible production, terrible songs, angsty whining from start to finish.

Death Magnetic is a little bit better, but still crap. And production is worst I have ever heard, a distorted clip-fest that puts Californication to shame.

And yes, if you like old Metallica definetly give Megadeth a listen! The mainman of Megadeth, Dave Mustaine, used to be in Metallica at its early days (released few demos) but was kicked out due to his bad drug habbits. He got angry and started Megadeth to compete with Metallica and he tried to best them all the time. Didnt succeed though, Megadeths albums were always one step behind Metallica at the charts back then. Nowadays Megadeth still puts out pure quality stuff where Metallica wanders in the sea of average mess so I guess he finally succeeded. :)

I think in "Justice For Jason" it was some fan who played the the bass line reading the charts (yes, there are ones) and remixed them into the songs, but unfortunately I think he went overboard. Now the bass guitar is way too loud!

my understanding of the bass guitar being too loud, was so that you would be able to notice it better, or what ever excuse the person wanted to use instead of saying, "I screwed up the mix."
