Unamped Phone Question

Thread Starter

Hey guys,

I have been doing a lot of research on this site but I cant seem to get enough info to pull the trigger. Anyways, As far as background, I'm mostly into jazz but I enjoy hip-hop and rock as well. I'm looking for some un-amped phones that are open and are under around $250. So far, I have looked into Sennheiser HD's(not sure if they work with no amp) or Grado SR225i. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great appreciated, thank you very much.

Sennheiser HD...what?

You could look into Katun's threads:

He's been comparing HD600 and 650, both amped an unamped.

32ohm's is a standard for unamping.

Look for this or lower.

Some headphones do need a amp at 32ohms, but very rarely.

Get a Grado 325i because the bass is more profound to do hip hop over the Sr225i

ALL GRADO's DON'T NEED A AMP

Any Senn around you price need a amp. HD555, 558, 595, 598, 600, 650 to sound at their best. Not too much for the HD555 though

Yea, I was thinking of the HD55s vs the Grados. From what I read, a lot of guys don't use an amp with these and they still sound great. Is this true? Ive been reading about the Grados, they looks great as well but I'm worried because every review says they are super uncomfortable. Anyways, if you can chime in these are any other suggestions, that would be great.

I don't really understand people when they say Grado's are uncomfortable since they are the most comfortable headphone I own and had the pleasure of testing.

GO for a Grado and bent the headband to reduce clamping. That will give you your comfort.
