i would stay stick with the nano for just now, see how you like them together then get an amp based on what direction you would like the take the sound.  something brighter and crisper or warmer and with a bass boost button.

Good enough I used my GR04 pro with the FIIO E6 with good results and they work nicely together. Just dont use the bass boost of the E6 (red led )because it makes mids kinda murky

The M2 has much better bass extension althought the Gr04 has better details , specially in the mids. I guess its hard to be certain about most of the differences without AB testing. The only thing I can tell you for sure is that even when M2 has very forward mids it does not sound as euphonic as the GR04 Pro FE.

Nano with GR04 = enjoyable jogging !

I love this combo for the Gym and running around.

I know that GR04FE has been discontinued.

I have searched eBay and I could only find it at ~$95 is there any seller that still has it at ~$45?

just search for GR04 on ebay and that should find you a couple.  i cant imagin there is all that much difference between the higher and lower versions of the 4 and even then as i understand the difference was only the impedance levels

You are right about that but these are the standard edition and I thought that there have been some major differences between GR04 and GR04FE especially the mids and the soundstage IIRC. I'm not sure if that was a comparison between the old R04 and the GR04.

You can always go for the VSD1/VSD1S coz they are doing some things better than gr04fe.

So the VSD1/S are the "new" GR04FE? I just need a budget (under $50 shipped) midranged IEM especially for Classic Rock / Grunge. I was thinking GR06 but I've read that GR04FE are better in that field. I don't really need bass since I'm waiting for a bassier IEM so I want something with different signature.

Well, there is difference coz the gr04fe is mid-centric but it does lack extension on both ends and honestly the way I like it is with the sony mh1c tips, which make it more balanced and laid back. I would be comparing the two again later today but they are both great. The gr04fe in comparison is more of a mid-forward and intimate sounding but mids on VSD1/S are just right - it's not a bass heavy V-shaped iem - it's more of a warm and sweet versatile iem with slightly boosted bass. The VSD1/S are great with rock and honestly if I had to choose between a stock gr04fe without the mh1c tips and the VSD1?S I would most likely go for the latter

I think that lack of extension would be somehow a problem since I need the mids but I don't really want to lose anything else.maybe I should add VSD1 now since they are all similarly priced. Since I will use them strictly unamped via a Samsung smartphone, does the 50Ω affect the performance of the GR04FE?

Well, that's the problem with gr04fe with stock tips - it's a bit aggressive in the mids and that combined with the smooth and a bit rolled off treble will make, for instance, stuff like cymbal crashes and such to get lost. Also for a smartphone I would go for the VSD1/S too - it's easier to drive and even though it has lower impedance and higher sensitivity than the gr04fe it actually is less prone to hissing.

honestly, i dont know.  there were so many name changes and such with that product it got to the stage i coulnt be sure what was what but like i said i think the difference was just impedance.

They aren't sold separately. You have to actually buy mh1c or mh1 coz it's cheaper.
