Sound quality difference between Sennheiser HD 589 and HD 25-1ii?

From what I've been reading, 25-1's have punchier bass but not as deep as 589 . 25-1 more forward and more treble (somewhat harsh?) compared to 598. On the other hand, 598's are more balanced, warm, and better at handling mids than 25-1? -- are these assessments correct?

 

I'm debating over the two, being that 25-1ii's are portable and closed while the 598's are open but seem to have better sound placement and perhaps sound quality? Is their sound quality really that far apart? (I've seen a lot of good reviews about the 598's) I'm willing to sacrifice portability for sound quality if that really is the case. As for music, they will be used for acoustic, rock, electronic, jazz, to classical- a wide array.

One one headphone exist

 

Now the HD598 is a dark horse to the Senn line up

 

The HD25 would be more laid back and more, I guess "balanced" would be the term. But then the HD598 are more "balanced" then the HD25

 

Here's a rough breakdown:

In Hd598's favor:

 

highs - smoothed, more aggressive

mids - more detailed, but needs amping for lower end

lows - more punch but less detailing, needs amping for upper end

soundstage - wider by far. But still engaging

detail - mids and highs are detailed, lows need a good amp to control.

clarity - lower, since the HD598's bass impact roughs things up

comfort - around ear, light and soft with velour. It's a slaughter against the HD25, in the HD598's favor

 

 

Think of them as Grado SR225i with more soundstage

 

 

EDIT: they would be better for listening to music then analyzing music. Analytical cans of the same nature would be like the Shure 940

 

I choose the HD598 over them for this FUN-ess

Ordered it from electronic expo. Too bad I couldn't try them out first... The only place to buy audio equipment around my area is guitar center and their headphone inventory is really small. Thanks Botbyte & Head-fi

What ? I  can't believe they have any punch on the bass. My hd595 have NO punch, and from what I've read on the appreciation thread the bass is one weak point of the hd598 too. And if you are concerned by the bass, the logical choice would be the hd25, which are DJ  headphones.

 

Also I  don't get how the high could be smoothed and more aggressive at the same time, it is too oppposites.
