If you're thinking about the pro line and willing to spend a little extra the 2900s are  a no brainer. If you want to spend even more there is always the signature pro, I haven't heard that one yet (but its on order, I should hopefully have my pair soon).

Hmm, well I had been leaning towards the 900s based on reviews and also wanting to give a higher end closed headphone a try.  I don't suppose you've heard the HFI-2400s?  I'd be very interested in your thoughts on how they compare to the pro 2900s if so.  I was planning to wait for the 900s to come back down to the $350 area, I'm not sure if I can stomach another $100 for the 2900s.  The only set of headphones I've bought for more than $100 so far is my 2400s and those were $250 which seemed insane at the time but I definitely don't regret it now.

On another note I came home to find a Fiio e9 on my doorstep today, my 2400s and e7 are still at work (safely locked up) so I decided to try it out using my DJ1s and the Xfi Titanium in my desktop for a source.  I'm sure this amp is complete overkill with the DJ1s (can't even turn the knob past 9:00) but I forgot how much I enjoyed the DJ1s for electronic music.  Threw on some Five Finger Death Punch too but I feel the 2400s do a much more pleasing job there so I went back to some Infected Mushroom.  Can't wait to try out the 2400s and e7 with the e9, not sure if it will be much of a difference over just e7 -> 2400s since the e7 seems to have no difficulty at all with them but I bought the e9 more as preparation for my next set of headphones anyway.  (At the time I ordered it was figuring either Fischer Audio FA-011 or Ultrasone Pro 900 though I'm curious about those 2900s now, my poor wallet...  thank god for tax returns)

First of all, I was pretty skeptical about aftermarket/upgraded cables making a difference in SQ even prior to ordering these cables.  I didn't have any unrealistic expectations (completely different sound signature etc...), but after reading reviews, I ordered the detachable Blue Dragon with a 1/4 plug.

I received my Blue Dragons today about 2 hours ago and have been "a/b" comparing them with my stock cables.  Am I now a "believer" that headphone cables  do make a difference in SQ??? . . YES!  (I still don't believe that other cables such as USB cables make any difference in SQ)

Is the SQ completely different?  No. . . and I didn't expect such a change.  The most significant and noticeable difference is in the bass.  The simplest way I can describe the difference is this:  It adds more of a "rumble" to the "punchy" bass the Pro900's are famous for . . in a good way . . . in a great way.  The change is not "night and day difference", but the change in bass is definitely noticeable and so far, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Now, is it worth a $180 difference from the stock cable??  Maybe not for everyone, but for me . . yes.

and then we start getting into the arguments of is a pimped out lower series class better than the higher class equivalent. so if you spend $250 on an HD598 improvements. will that pimped out headphone be "better" than the HD650. just questions that i have yet to answer actually

It's pretty weird to me that the Pro 900 are cheaper out there than the Pro 2900. Out here it's the same price on them. I wouldn't look at them as anymore different than one being open and the other being closed.

Greetings and Salutations!

The HFI-780 and E11 just arrived from B&H today. My first Ultrasones!

The short cable is a bit stiff and needs to relax... :)

Running my music collection through it now and some of it sounds amazing.

Love my dj1 pros

Greetings Ultrasone sisters and brothers, I'm new here but been reading the forums forever

My wonderful 7 year run with my HFI-550 ended out of fear that the slightly-bent phone jack would eventually mess up my iPod headphone input. Headphones overall are in great shape and the sound remains the stuff of legend. But 7 years meant an upgrade was overdue...enter the DJ1 Pro.

They arrived yesterday and while I'm aware of burn-in time, is it me or are the DJ1 Pro headphones seriously lacking bass? I figured the DJ1 Pro would have a more balanced soundstage (and I love that about the DJ1 Pro)...but its to the point where I'm thinking that a portable amp is in order...which never was the case with the HFI-550.

I don't consider myself a heavy basshead although my taste in music ranges from old school hip-hop, classic house, rock, funk, jazz, breaks and afrobeat. Did I not choose the right headphones? I figured after 7 years with the HFI-550 it would make sense to upgrade to Pro. Should I have gone for the current version HFI-580 instead? Or am I not giving the DJ1 Pro a chance? Any guidance is much appreciated as I have a few weeks to exchange if needed. Budget is $200 and I prefer a solution that doesn't require an amp as was the case with my HFI-550...and I'll be using with an iPod classic mostly.

Thanks and God bless Ultrasone..no headset ever lasted 7 years in my hands.

The DJ1 PRO does lack a bit of bass. Its a neutral headphone, even the FR graphs of the PRO550 (same headphone) suggest so.

The DJ1 Pro and Audio Technica PHA-10 portable amp sounds crisp and detailed to my ears, the S-logic

appears to be doing it's thing as having spent half the day with an M50 and then playing back the whole

playlist with these DJ1's - separation, sound stage and treble extension are superior.

Bass overall is snare like and tighter with the DJ1, it's free of bloat in my opinion.

It will never appeal to the basshead brigade and yet it offers a new, clean perspective on bass orientated

 material.

Gwarmi, you seem to have heard both the PRO550 and DJ1 PRO, do you hear a difference between them?

The HFI-580 is the same headphone as the DJ1.

The PRO550 is the same headphone as the DJ1 Pro.

The differences are purely cosmetic. Ultrasone have confirmed this.

There is bugger all difference in it - I'd need to spend more time with them but I really do think it's the same drivers in a different packaging.

Thing is, how you amp the Pro 550 or DJ1 Pro in the portable sense is how you end up with a different sound signature.

I much prefer something minimalist and clean like the AT-PHA10 over the Fiio E11 - the latter definitely brings out more bass quantity

and impact but overall - it's not clean. Even modestly amped - they're not bad. Passive isolation as well deserves a mention, they

can take a cranking before annoying the person next to you on public transport.

I did that with my study group in the lib. It was all good until I took them off my head and the whole library stared at me... Mates pretended as if they don't know me... But when the phones are on my head, they are fine.

So would coupling the DJ1 Pro with the Fiio E7 amp bring back some of that bass that I'm missing? I enjoy the balanced sound and comfort the DJ1 Pro delivers but I need my bass to sound a wee bit stronger than a snare.
