Well then lets rule this democratically. As the majority claims that the HFI-2400 is not piercing, I will give in. Especially because I sold this can last year.  And yes the PRO-2900 are not dark at all.

I must have too many bright headphones, the HFI-2400 sounds quite dark to me.

I wouldn't describe schiit products as "powerful", they're more entry level good quality components. You most definitely can plug your hfi580s into the amp. Just make sure you keep your volume low

Be careful, that isn't a recommended gear pairing. The Lyr works best with higher impedance headphones, and can blow the HFI-580 out if you push them too hard.

 

The Schiit Asgard would be a much better pairing.

But all headphone amplifiers, unless badly designed, will NOT blow your headphones off as long as you use it sensibly.

can somebody make up my mind for me? I'm looking at the DJ 1, DJ 1 Pro, and the HFI 780s. I listen to House, Dubstep, Drum and bass, and Techno exclusively. I love bass but im coming from sony xb 500s and I know that I want tight accurate bass with clear mids, and shiny highs. Which pair of cans would be the best for me?

Yes, in principle. It'll get painfully loud to your ears before you put the headphones themselves in risk. That said, I'd agree with the other posters about re-considering.

True. That said, most dedicated headphone amplifiers can blow most headphones up, but again, it'll get painful for the listener before it gets "painful" for the cans. But it shouldn't damage anything out of the box if properly designed and in working order.

I may be a bit out of sync, but aren't the DJ1 almost identical to one of the closed HFI models? Just asking in the event that you're actually considering the same headphone twice (the HFI and the DJ1). I don't have a vote between the three (I haven't tried any of them), at least on sonics. The DJ1 Pro looks most appealing to me in terms of "what you get" though - since it comes packaged like a PROline (removable cables, pads, hardcase, etc - I like those kinds of features).

they are identical hfi 580s. The pros are bigger than the dj 1.

There isn't that much info about the Dj1 pro out there. The hfi-780 might be too bright for dubstep especially artists like Zomboy or Eptic that like mixing really high pitched noises. With that said, I think the dj1 or hfi-580 would be a good fit for the music you listen to

HFI-780 for sure . Awesome tight accurate deep bass, forward clear mids, and a sparkly treble. It's just what you need.

In theory, and this is a pretty extensive mod I'm about to suggest, one could strip a pair of HFI-780s down and re-paint them like that (or anything else) - you could get a similar finish to the Ed9 if you put the time into it. But it would be pretty extensive to completely strip them down for that.
