DT770Pro 250Ohm's looking for a companion or two

Last year I finally took the plunge when my $20 headphones broke yet again on me, and the suggestion of my girlfriend was a good one: get a decent one.

While she provided part of the price for my birthday, I added up to the grand total on the headphones.

DT770 Pro's were something I once listened to, and loved it ever since. It was relatively cheap at $150 at the time, but being a student and having other expenses too made me settle for that moment, and ever since I have been driving them through my Creative T20 speakers which in turn are powered by an Asus Xonar DX/XD.

While they sound fine as is, I really think my headphones would profit from a better amp and/or DAC.

The shortlist I've found till date is as follows:

-Little Dot Mk III (through their site)

-Rega Ear (local retailer)

-Lehmann Rhinelander (local retailer)

-Fubar Mk III

-Schiit

-Maverick Audio D1 with or just A1

But I need your help.

You could all ways replace your Xonar DX with the Xonar Essence STX (and upgrade the STX's headphone op-amps).

There are lots of low cost single tube headphone amplifiers on eBay ($45-$120).

I would say you'll definitely benefit from an external amp.  I had the DT990 250ohm hooked up to an Essence on max gain and even that card didn't do them justice.

That, and a soundcard is easily replaced down the line, while I want an amp/DAC setup that can last several computers.

I am on a budget though, being a student and working only 24 hours a week.

The Maverick looks nice and got pretty good reviews, though I'm doubtful if I need the DAC when I have a pretty good soundcard (would hook it up optically), the Schiit amps look great, but I've yet to read the reviews, the fubar gets mediocre reviews, haven't tried the Rega Ear and Lehmann Rhinelander yet, will do so next week or so.
