Question about amps for the Stax SR-009 - Page 49

That's a good point, Dave. I'm not an expert but I think tubes will vary a lot depending on the design they are used.
I wanted just to report my impressions about these Tesla and of course didn't want to spoil the BHSE thread.

And then we have personal taste too: other friends using my same amp have found the Mullard XF2 to sound 'blurry and confused', and have preferred RFTs for example. The same tube is a reference for another friend of mine, again with the same amp (and he now seems to prefer the MK1 to the 009 too!)
Usually I prefer clarity, detail and timbre accuracy over 'richness and warmth', to give an idea.

The same tube will sound slightly differently in different amplifiers due to the circuit and other associated components, so no hard and fast rule. Thats the joy of tube rolling.

Generally I find my sound hierarchy as (highest) vintage British > vintage European/American > Communist Block > Chinese (lowest). This also equates to the build quality and materials used.

However; some vendors who are having tubes produced in China now but control the design, materials and QA are producing some excellent examples, but generally the run of the mill stuff is quite poor.

I installed RCA cleartops in my 007t/ii and posted photos here:

I am using RCA clear tops in my SRM T1S with SR-009 and the sound is surreal!

Much better sounding than the Stax stock tubes that came with the T1S!

Thanks for confirming what I hear with these tubes. The tubes are pretty cheap and they do a great job but I never see anyone who has tried them on their Stax amp.

A customer just shared a couple of pics of his new WES and SR009 with us.  Although the wait was about 4 weeks, he's really happy with the amp.

Lovely pictures and beautiful setup!
I can spot a MSB dac and a Auralic Aries, correct?
And the armchair is sooo nice!

Thank you. Thats correct, I am using the MSB analog with an Aries. I had been using the Stax 007II Tube Amp for last few weeks on loan from the local shop here until my Woo arrived. The difference is truly night and day. The Woo is much more lush sounding and really rounds out the bass more than the Stax amp. Service and response time from WOO was also fantastic. Highly highly recommended.

The armchair is a Moroso "Take a line for a walk" FYI.

Nice setup there, congrats! I do like the look of the WOO WES. It is quite a different approach to the BHSE as in tube regulated PS and input.

Both share quad EL34 on the output, though I am told the BHSE has them only on the 4th gain stage.

I was thinking the WOO WES got a bit of an unfair? hammering on this forum. It is good to see other amps in discussion at the price point of the BHSE.

I don't have a tubed Stat amp, but have a tubed DAC instead. I think having some tubes in the system has benefits sonically, as long as you can handle the hassle of tubes that is.

Thanks for the armchair name! My setup is quite stable so I'm thinking to change my listening area in 2015. That chair is quite nice, funny enough Moroso is an Italian brand but despite being Italian I never heard of it...possibly because the price is not very 'popular': about £2k here in UK!

Not quite sure what "hammering" you are talking about, are you referring to the innerfidelity review?

2K would be considered a bargain here in Shanghai. The chair retails for almost double that here!

Initially I thought the Auralic Aries was the Wadia Intuition.  LOL....

I am new to headfi. I haven't spent a lot of time reading every last post. However, I did read a lot about the woo and other amplifiers before purchasing the WES. Most of the reviews I read were very positive which is why I asked which posts you are referring to. I was honestly curious.

Your rather rude 'or can't you read ?' response wasn't really necessary. But to answer your question, I read well enough to notice a kindergarten level spelling mistake. if you are going to question someone's ability to read, you should probably try and get your spelling right in 'hear'.

Reviews here and other places (inner-fidelity) have not been that good for the wes.

There are some online and other magazines who at times review headphones and related gear but I haven't found much that is actually trustworthy - e.g. comments about gear I heard myself were so many miles off my own impressions.
