Diagnose Custom in-ear driver problem

Hi guys,

 

hope you could help me out. 

So out of the blue, my left in-ear custom died.. there's a faint sound and it was intermittent for awhile.


I was ready to send it for a reshell and replace a driver, till i found out replacing a drivers' so expensive! 

The dilemma is if it's just a loose wiring with no driver damage there's no charge, if there is, and i decide not to go ahead with it it's a 50% forfeit of the cost.

 

Would I be able to self diagnose if it's some connection issue or a driver problem?

Have you checked the sound bores for any debris and plugged the right end of the cable into the left earpiece to see if it was just the cable? Also, tried a different source?

yeah i dug out my ear bugers already =) and tried the cable bit too..

 

should i just break it open to take a look anyhow? since i can't even use it as it is now.. hmmm

Before you perform the irreversible and that is void whatever warranty you may have by cracking open the shell, can you tell me what this custom IEM is? Is it a remold and how long ago have you had it?

Hey Tronz =)

 

well no more warranty definitely.. it's by "Freqs" which are no longer around actually they didn't last very long at all, but they were good enough customs for me so I'm not complaining about their quality. =)

It's the Freq Show Music maker series, triple driver.

Well I guess you can break em' open, but you risk damaging the components inside because they're glued to the shell. I'd personally send them off to UM to get them fixed.

yeah that'd be worse wouldn't it.. shan't try to be all brave.

Id send them off to In Earz (AKA Fisher Hearing)  I believe his company built those products in the first place. (did the lab work for Freq) I would imagine the drivers are not proprietary and he would replace them (if needed) with the original driver.   UM may not have the driver in stock, may have to order it, or replace it with something that is not an exact match....
