Pick my new sound system! (and some car speakers)

So I've been researching all day, and the biggest lesson I've learned is that it will take way too long to figure all this stuff out. I would take my time with it and figure it out, but I need a new system ASAP since my current system will cut all my speakers except 1 if I turn it up too much. I've just gotten Home Theatres In A Box in the past, which I'm still willing to go with, but I'm thinking maybe something else would be better.

I'm looking to spend $300-700
It will be connected to my PC, have an HDMI out and I think 2 3.5mm outs, I am willing to spend another $100-$200 for a sound card
I think I probably want to go S/PDIF
It should be 5.1 or higher
I will be using it for lossless Music, Movies/TV, Video Games
I think I probably want to get studio reference monitors?

Also I need some speakers for my car. I've got 2 subs in the trunk and the stock speakers cant keep up. I was just going to look for some speakers in the $100-$300 range on crutchfield, but if anyone has a better idea I'm game. I will be listening to V0 and 320 MP3s on my iPod through a USB connection.

Hmm not too sure abour car set up but for the PC audio:

Where u at cos availability/shipping might very well depend on this. Also if u in USA i would dip into Craiglist and hunt for still very nice AVR that are cheap but no HDMI in (which u do not require)

Starting in the entry level/cheap end for 5.1 hifi on top of my head off Newegg (before AVR included)

I'm in Maryland, USA. What should I be looking for in terms of AVRs? (considering I pretty much know nothing about em)

Well LCD TVs these days have HDMI in and even VGA/DVI so there are many ways you could just pass display over from PC so that leaves how u gonna pass audio to the AVR While i am no expert in super grand set ups, the choice of AVR would IMO depend on

1. Size of room

2. How loud you wanna go

3. Efficiency of speakers. Example you gonna have to get a power hungry AVR if you are powering some inefficient 83dB speakers but even the above Polks come @ 89dB so are preety easy to drive

4. Track record. There so many models of AVR so w/e is available you could download the spec sheet, read reviews (owners feedback) to have a better idea of stuff like how dependable/durable it is for 24/7 ops for example. I remembered in the 80/90s some reviews singing praises of some AVR/amps but owners report them dying after 2 years of use hehe

Also i dun mean to say there aren't experts here on head-fi but IMO AVS Forums have dedicated sub forums for HT, Receivers/Amps, Subwoofer and Speakers and yes some of them over there excel at setting up and advising peeps on super crazy set ups lol Might be a good idea to drop by there as well tongue_smile.gif

My feeling is for medium rooms and fairly efficient speakers you need not lose sleep that your AVR does not belt out say 150 watts per channel (i would think maybe 75-100 is reasonable range)

edit: Oh ya they also have a Car Audio sub forums L3000.gif
