PerfectWave DAC from MSS HiFi - Good or Bad Idea?

I've read of a few bad dealings with this business but he has a lot of good feedback on ebay. All the bad strories I've read seem to be from selling stuff through audiogon. Has anyone bought any gear off these guys and had any hassles?

$2000 plus $200 for postage to Australia seems like a pretty good price. It's also another $200 to have the power converted to 240V. They say they send it back to the factory to be re-wired but I reckon they would do it themselves. Could they re-wire it for 240V and stuff something up? Is there much involved in re-wiring the PerfectWave DAC to 240 volt?

This is the listing on ebay

Does anyone know how they sell they're stock so cheap?

MSS Hi-Fi is not a good seller.  Just Google the name and you will find A LOT of issues.

Honestly, nowadays I don't deal with ebay sellers fron NYC.  Never a good experience.

I wouldn't trust the self proclaimed "audio pimp" with my money. This is the same guy who claimed that his Synergistic Research PowerCell with the serial conspicuously absent was "accidentally made that way" from the factory. Yeah OK, sure.

His prices are so cheap because "the stuff just fell off a truck".

More humorous anecdotes from the audio pimp.

"Have fun shopping our new website and also check out our eBay store listings.
Audiogon has been compromised! It is controlled by a partnership of manufacturers to control the flow of gear online. If you're a dealer selling under a pseudonym on Audiogon, be very careful, the manufacturers have access. But fear not. Hififlo.com will be introduced soon, a totally seller friendly marketplace to help you beat "the big brothers" and blow things out all over the world.
Very silly... Audiogon doesn't want to do business with MSS HiFi anymore after their director of marketing Bill Slob won our CES Dream Date raffle and was caught on video with a pornstar. Audiogon's Amy S desperately wanted to put out for the #1 Superstar but was rudely rejected. True stories."

Well... I had one good experience with MSS HiFi on eBay for one pair of Audioquest interconnects. I saved several hundred $ and it was a smooth transaction. Interconnects are one thing, electronics are a completely different ballgame. Buyer beware!

cheap audioquest on ebay? fake.

If they are they are very authentic looking and sounding fakes. I have several AQ cables in my system to compare them to.

Most of the fake AQs on eBay come from the far east. Never buy any high-end cable on eBay from China. I don't think MSS cables would be fake - more like grey... or possibly black market. That Synergistic Powercell they had was almost certainly stolen somewhere along the line.

Is there much chance of it being fake? My biggest concern is paying that much for something that could be fake and me being new to this audiophile world I wouldn't know the difference.

Could them changing the power supply possibly make the DAC sound worse?

The first possibility is that you send the money, and it never shows. What's your recourse in that event? The second possibility is that it shows, but they botch the PS voltage conversion, and it doesn't work. What do you do with it then? Based on the reputation of JB Audio Pimp (arrested for threatening escorts with a gun, btw) it seems like those first two are considerably more likely than it showing, and working. Even if it does, it's most likely a grey market item, something PS audio likely won't touch if service is required at any point. Is a bit of savings worth all that risk?

For me in Australia  the price is $3500 AUD without the bridge then another $800 for the bridge plus postage, which would work out about $4400 total. I can get the unit from MSS HIFI posted for at least $3000 - PWD $2000 + Bridge $600 + re-winding to 240V $200 + $150 postage. Paypal is pretty good with giving refunds through ebay and I sell a lot of things through ebay so if any problems like you said arose I should be okay. My only concerns are with the voltage change. Would it be hard to change voltages on them?

If you say so. If I were in your shoes, I would just look for something used in AU. I don't know how big the second hand market is, but here there are always quite a few PWDs in the $2K range from reputable Audiogon sellers, as opposed to the #1 audio pimp who was kicked off of Audiogon.

I wish there were some second hand units here but I have not seen any and have been looking for the past month. I'm still trying to decide on which DAC to get so whether to buy the PWD is still up in the air.

Maybe contact PS Australia and see if they are willing to convert a US unit? Or you could use a transformer to convert your power to 120. There are a couple of PWDs on A-gon for sellers that will ship worldwide. The reason to get the PWD is the network bridge, otherwise there are other DACs that are as good or better at that price level.
