In Ears don't work for me, where to now?

Hey guys,

I listen to music and podcasts on my daily commute to and from work. I also listen to music at the gym and jogging on the street.

I have gone through countless pairs of in-ear headphones and they simply don't work for me. Super-fi 4vi, A-Jays One, Etymotics and Sennheisers. They've all given me ear pain, I can never manage to get them to fit properly using multiple tips, I get wax build up on the tips, and just a general nuisance for me no matter how much I want them to work. Additionally, none have lasted more than 4 or 5 months and have just died on me. The stock apple buds work fine for me though in terms of comfort, I guess because they don't stick in far.

I was about to get the Bose IE2 In-Ear simply due to comfort because they don't really stick deep in ear. However I realised they'd be useless on the train with the loud noise as they won't isolate.

Out of all the in-ear headphones I've tried, the A-Jays One were the most comfortable for me. However they did require some fiddling and the connector to the 3.5mm jack broke after a few months.

Where to now? Do I get a pair of small closed on-ear headphones? This would work for my commute but not for the gym unless they were particularly small.

I was thinking of getting a pair of Sennheiser PX200 or Marshall Major headphones for the commute, and for the gym either sticking to the stock Apple earbuds or getting something like the Koss KSC75.

Anyone have any similiar experiences or can make any recommendations?

Have you tried the Comply Tips?

I've tried foam before but they got full of wax. I just saw Comply offer wax-guard tips, do these offer a lot of improvement in terms of wax buildup?

What earphones would be good to try with these Comply tips- I still have a pair of A-Jays One earphones I got as a replacement, do they fit this?

The wax guard tips stops the wax from going in the iem but you still have to clean it. You gotta clean your ears first.

Refer to this thread (http://www.head-fi.org/t/509405/anyone-use-comply-tips-with-their-a-jays) about the Comply tips on the A-Jays.

Hey guys,

I picked up the Sennheiser HD25 (adidas)

Great headphones! Perfect - I just wish they were able to fold/had music controller.

Other than that- the sound, portability and comfort - are perfect!

Some of the universals are very uncomfortable.

He complained about fit and pain. Customs should fit well

I actually never had customs though. Too expensive for me :(

Have fun with the hd25 :)

Let me tell you what literally saved me from giving up on IEMs.

I used IEMs back in 2006 and loved them but couldn't use them for more than 30mins or the horrid ear pain would come on. So, I was bound by this restriction.

Then, in 2007, along came Klipsch eargels. I have been using them ever since and due to the oval shape and not round, they fit the ear canal perfectly and now instead of 30mins of use, I can keep them in for hours on end!!!

Grab yourself a pack and give them a go. If they work for you, you will be able to enjoy IEMs with total comfort!

What IEM's do they fit on?

I was originally looking at the Klipsch X10 but they were too expensive

Future Sonics Atrio's.

Which IEMs do you have?

Yes, I had a similar experience to you, Nephilonic, I think. I tried several iem's: ue triplefi 10, sennheiser ie8, denon AHC751 and others. But I found them pretty uncomfortable and unpleasant to insert. Then I went down the path of using big full size cans with portable amps. That was better but it was a hassle spending 5 minutes getting everything set up for a 20 minute stroll. For the last few weeks I have been using the v-jays straight into the iphone and loving it. Just chuck them on and away I go - they are lively and detailed enough to get into the tunes without being super revealing and making me think about the horrible iphone source.

It is not close to the quality of my desktop setup but for my short walk to work it is perfect.
