For Sale:
Custom Ortho - Yamaha YH-1 drivers in a Sennheiser HD600 shell

Will Ship To: USA only

Up for sale is this unique, one of a kind creation - a vintage Yamaha YH-1 Orthodynamic driver, well tuned with custom damping, inside a Sennheiser HD600 frame. They have some sort of felt covering so they are more like a semi-closed headphone than the wide open HD600. They do leak some sound but not as much as most open cans do.

Sennheiser frame is in good shape, with the usual slight fading of the logo on top of the headband. See pics. Instead of the stock velour pads, these have some type of vinyl pads that appear custom stuffed with foam. They are comfy enough, seal well, and more importantly help the bass extend very low compared to using the stock pads.

I'm letting these go to raise funds for a balanced Thunderpants made from an exotic/expensive wood. That might not even be an improvement over this custom Ortho but I need a closed headphone. I'm asking the same amount that I paid - $260 shipped with the stock HD650 cable. I also have a nice custom made 1.5m cable with 4-pin balanced XLR termination. I paid $180 for it but will sell as a package for $360 shipped. I'll be listing that cable separately as well.

Since this is a custom creation, I'll try to describe the sound a little. Using the stock HD600 for comparison, this custom is easily superior in my opinion. It is more neutral overall, with cleaner and more satisfying mids. They have a similarly open sound, with the Ortho having much more isolation/less sound leakage. Bass is somewhat polite - closer in quantity to the HD600 than HD650, but with deeper extension than either. I never wanted for impact when using these and they don't seem bass shy at all when driven with a powerful amp. These are rated at 150 ohms and with all the damping they probably had a sensitivity of 85dB or so - you'll want a powerful amp to drive them to their fullest. When properly driven, I like these better than any of the usual suspects like K701, HD600, HD650, DT880, DT990, and even RS1.

Any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for looking!

EDIT: Price drop, asking $250 shipped with the HD650 cable, or $350 with the custom balanced cable. This is priced similar to what a regular stock HD600 would go for, but in my humble opinion is a far superior headphone.

I wish I had seen this earlier.  Good luck.  I'll be watching this thread, hoping for someone to drive by and throw a bag of cash at my feet.

How did you go about to seal the baffle?

I didn't make these myself - some seasoned Orthodynamicist from this forum made them.

Does the balanced cable also include a matching phone plug pigtail?   Also, are the stock HD600 pads included along with the customs?

Thanks...

Sorry it's a no on both. Stock pads don't sound good at all on these anyway - they leak too much or something. Adapter should be easy enough to make or have made by someone. Or just use the stock cable for single ended operation.
