Looking for DIY DAC/Amp combo

Thread Starter

Long time listener, first time caller etc.  I'm trying to find a a combo USB DAC and headphone amp kit if such a beast exists. Have poked around older threads without too much luck.  Anything  less than $300 is probably my budget point at this stage.

Why not get a combo?  I mostly listen via a iPod LOD and Millet Max at work (can't put mp3's on work machine) but on the odd times when I work from home I want to plug straight in to PC and just want a a simple single box for those times.

Of course I could get a prebuilt like a Foobar III but where would be the fun in that? :)

[Edit: Found this kit from hifidiy.net - thoughts?]

Cheers,

 Graeme

You might want to ask around and see if anyone has an extra one of joneeboi's Carrie boards. It's a board for a USB-powered Mini^3 that you can easily tie a Bantam or Grub DAC to. Plug one USB cable into your comp and you're ready to go smily_headphones1.gif

If you can find a board the total cost will probably be < $100

Here's his project website if you're interested: http://www.ualberta.ca/~jple/carrie/index.html
