Naw dog, the RS1 AND RS2 are part of there Reference series...what ever that means, they have never been there flag ship if I remember, the PS1000 is the flagship followed by the GS1000, and before that I believe it was the HP series of headphones. The leather on both the RS2 and 1 is fantastic, I agree a box is a box...how ever it would be nice for a company that makes WOODEN HEADPHONES to throw in a classy box.

On a related note, has anyone ever confirmed that Grado uses the same or different drivers for different headphones? I feel like it would be extra telling if RS1 drivers are mostly the same as SR60 drivers.

Well considering they all sound different in the SR line up and ALL of them Including the 325i's have plastic air chambers, the only thing that can change the sound is the driver. The Magnum drivers look identical and sound different as well. A fellow head-fier let me use hit woodied moded sr80i and I chuckled a bit. In no way did it change it's sound IMO. He had not dampened but did re-cable, it was still the same shrill, screechy, and bass less headphone I remember.

Drivers doesn't need to be different models to sound differently. Just take the drivers from the same batch and measure their performance, depending on how they perform they get into different headphones. Higher tier models also have more closely matched drivers and more consistent performance throughout the line. Maybe they also employ some methods to enhance the better driver, de-stressing and whatnot...

My beef with Grado is that the build quality of higher tier phones has dropped significantly. Compare buttoned and button-less RS headphones. Also text on the PS500 is a joke.

Not to say that LCD-2 is also without any sin. Hardly any headphone is.

Ah, I have a Button RS2, I have foolishly been comparing all of the newer models to mine thinking the build would be the same.  heh.

I've seen a few LCD-2 earpads (rev2's) that feel and look pretty scrappy after 4 months or so of regular use.

Cheek side where the headphone exerts the most pressure upon the head, cracked pad material.

Still it's entirely acceptable by my standards ~ still never ceases to amaze me though how many people

walk away from these things because of the weight. Time, and time again.

Suprises me too, I would wear a cactus on my head if it sounded good.  Having bad neck posture doesn't help often.

The new 'faux leather' LCD3 pads should be able to be retro fitted to the LCD2's ~ I found the new LCD3 to be a more

 comfortable beast all round.

hmm have been looking at LCD-3 but wallet won't cooperate.  Laid back probably won't do for rock either.

Another plus for rock with LCD-2/3 is that it stays on your head while headbanging - Grados will just fall offL3000.gif

I have a buttonless RS-2... it looks like the wood is lighter and the lettering isn't as nice

Thanks!  But I just have a bunch of crazy ideas like everyone else.  :-)  I think I talk too much crap about too many headphones on here to be a mod....
