White Noise in Songs

There are a few songs which I don't seem to be able to eliminate the white noise from... I'm not sure whether it's a question of my setup or something else.

I've eliminated the problem on a few songs by using FLAC files and I get very clear sound, but this doesn't fix the problem on some songs no matter the quality.

A couple examples:

Moonlight Sonata, Badge (by Cream) and Unchained Melody all have very audible "hissing" on a bunch of different versions I've tried.

I'm using Denon AH-D1001 through a UDAC-1.

Is this a problem with my equipment, or the actual recording of the song?

Thanks for any help!

What do you mean by "using" flac files? Do you mean converting the original source material into flac? If so, then you've narrowed it down to the recording, assuming the conversion to flac was without error. Some recordings (especially older ones) have more white noise than others.

Yes converting original source material into flac... or downloading versions which have supposedly been converted straight to flac from the source material.

I just tried one of these songs straight from the cd and it still had white noise, so I guess it's just the recording.

What was the three letter recording code on the CD also found on the back of the CD case? Unchained Melody is a 1955 song and could been originally recorded on tape to digital.

If you have good gear and old analog recordings you will hear the hiss of the master tape.

A very simple experiment: rip a recent recording. If the hiss is gone it is not your gear.

The one question that I was wondering about why would FLAC files reduce the hiss for some since it is supposedly be a Lossless format.

Lossless is just that. It's only lossless from the original. If there is hiss(say it's hiss from the master tape) then it will be in the FLAC as well or at least it should be. Embrace the hiss. It gives older music it's character.
