A good starter turntable set up

Thread Starter

Ive started getting into collecting vinyl. Most of my collection is hardcore/grindcore/thrash as well as things of that nature, and because most of these bands record tracks in basements and other areas where sound quality isnt very important, fidelity isnt too much of an issue, although id still like it to sound nice. I was looking at the Pyle PLTTB1 turntable. Ive found one new for about $70 on ebay, and from what ive seen, it looks pretty decent. Id prefer a manual player as opposed to automatic, because I have a few 5 inch records and I cant play them on a fully automatic system. Im pretty new to vinyl, and so I would also like to know the basics of what I would need to play it. Ive searched around, but most threads seem to be really long, detailed explainations of how it all works, so it gets to be confusing. I would just like to know exactly what I would need. I read something about needing an amp/pre-amp, and I found this http://cgi.ebay.com/Pyle-PP444-Ultra-Compact-Phono-Turntable-Preamp-/230660971750?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b4771ce6#ht_1899wt_1611. Would this be ok? I dont have too much money to spend, so cost is definitely an issue. Ive looked around thrift stores and cant find anything. Sorry if this is a long post, but I just want to know the basics of what I need to play vinyl records. Thanks guys!

These may have increased in price but I purchased mine with the winning bid of $130.00 in 2005. They may still be around for that price if you look. I purchased a used Vestax for my Brother and it seems to work for him. New turntables in the by Pyle may be great but I have not heard one. Maybe someone here will chime in with some review for you.

Even though these bands record in their basements they try and get the sound to the best point that they can. This Lo/Fi production is part of the charm of any grassroot rock movement and trying to play it back with the best system always improves matters. There is also a sound that this guys have been able to record that if played back right is amazing. I have so much live music and underground music that from one angle is recorded badly but from another angle is pure energy!

Even though I purchased my Thorens TD 160 on Ebay the guy really didn't pack it that well and I am surprised that it wasn't more broken up upon arrival. Turntable have a certain way that they need to be packaged for shipment. If you have a seller which is not experienced in locking down a platter or packing and taping everything correctly you could end up with something damaged and not even know it.

Buying a used turntable in your own town where you can pick it up in person is by far the best way if you don't go new. There are tons of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technics_SL-1200  s out there too. I owned two 1200s but seemed to like the Thorens better.

It would be cool to see a list of low cost China turntables which sound good. They seemed to improve on quality every year. There very well could be something new which sounds good. I purchased my 1200s used for $150.00 again this is something that you may have to look for. The cool part is a 1200 can grow with you and you will find many in love with them here and elsewhere on forums. They are bomb proof!

Many of my turntables I found at Salvation Army or Thrift Shops. There are always a couple of $25.00 old turntables around. One I purchased for $25.00 had a perfect $200.00 Shure Cartridge on it and sounded fantastic! They are out there if you check.
