Sennheiser HD 448's?

Hey guys. I have been listening to music on a relatively cheap headset for the last couple years and am now looking for a comfortable and relatively affordable pair of headphones to replace them. I have been researching some and have come across the Sennheiser HD 448's, which are under 100 bucks and have relatively good reviews.

My question is, do listening to them with my ipod or phone require an amplifier? Also, are there similarly priced headphones that offer more comfort or better sound quality? Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Vince

Its a good model that works nicely on portables. I use mine when i need some sound isolation. Sound is crisp, balanced, soundstage is excellent for a closed pair. Comfort is also excellent, where the only issue can be a little warmth (hot ears) during prolonged use.

I bought some 448's for my daughter's Ipod. She doesnt like ear buds or anything IEM.

They are decent cans for the money and they work well with her gear.

Sennheiser designed these for portables, mp3 players and their ilk.

Says so right on the box!

Thank you for the reply. I think I am gonna go with this pair of headphones. But final question, do they work without an amp when plugged into an ipod?

Yes, they work fine unamped, just "plug-n-play".

What kind of music you listen to?

I have reward points for my credit card, and the best headphones available are the 448's, ATH 700's and the KRK 8400. Are these all pretty equivalent in sound quality and durability?

Steer away from the 448s if durability is a very important factor.

Haven't personally tried the A/D700 and KRKs but I would describe the 448s as being bass-light but with a warm sound signature.

Warmth and detail are the most important to me - I mostly listen to strong female vocalists (Metisse, Melody Gardot, Diana Krall, Norah, etc) and 70's progressive (Rush, Pink Floyd) right now.

Is 56 dollars for the 448 a tremendous buy?  I know that's almost half of their original cost...but in the grand scheme of things...are the 448's really a value at 99 dollars?  And are they a steal at 56 or just a pretty decent buy?

Hi!

I just picked them up for $55. I think for this price they are a steal. The discount might be because the HD449 are out now, so old stock is being sold off.

Anyhow, the cans are really good for this price for sure.

Cheers,
