Speakers, possibly a sound card for >150$.

Hey there.

So, about a year ago I bought myself some Audio Technica ATH-M50's to use with my computer, so as not to keep others in my house awake (Night owl). I've also got some incredibly old computer speakers that I absolutely hate; they buzz, they cut out, and frankly I'm finished with them.

So, I'm on the lookout for new speakers, or a new set-up that would
1. Make use of my ATH-M50's

2. Include some decent speakers

3. Preferably have an easy to access jack for my headphones, as currently, I've got to go to the back of my computer, and switch the jacks for my speakers.

4. A subwoofer is not necesarry, as I'm living in my current situation for 2 more years and there is very little chance of it ever being used effectively.

So, I've got a budget of about 150$ and I'm unsure as to what route to go. I'm looking for them most bang for my buck so to speak, and I'm not sure about what would be the best for that: is it getting a stereo reciever and hooking everything up to that, or trying to get a sounds card and run eveything off that, or simply looking for some specific computer speakers with a head phone jack so as to save myself some trouble.

I think that, right now, my M-50's aren't being used to their full potential, as I've got no amp, or sound card.

Thanks for any information or suggestions you can give me.

Hmm does your current motherboard have a PCI, PCIe slot or both? Also where u at cos availability/shipping of speakers, etc might depend largely on this L3000.gif My 1st idea is something like an Asus Xonar DG sound card and run cans off front panel of case and either amp + bookshelf speakers or active monitors off rear line out at the back of case tongue_smile.gif Also i take it these are speakers that are right beside you when using the PC so they won't be more than say 2-3 feet away from your ears?

Asus Xonar DG, you can mail order it with no sales tax and free shipping, currently there is a $10 mail in rebate.

I'm located in British Columbia, Canada, and my MoBo has:

blt_subnav.gif 2 x PCIe x16/x8, 1 x PCIe x4, 1 x PCIe x1
blt_subnav.gif 2 x 32-bit PCI, support for PCI 2.1

taken from the website. Thoughts?

Should be lots of places in the U.S.A. you can mail order the Xonar DG (it's PCI) from and have shipped to Canada.

The mail in rebate does not apply outside of the U.S.A.

But good news is the Xonar DG has dropped to $23.00 on Amazon (plus shipping)

Lots of 2.0 speakers out there, find some on sale.

Thanks for the advice as far as the sound card, I'll probably pick up a xonar dg, as far as speakers and amps/receivers are concerned, what should I be looking for? Are there any that are widely regarded here as the best bang for you buck?

When I'm looking to buy stuff, usually I go to the Newegg web page and read the customer feedback.

I do try to keep in mind that the product manufacturers might sneak in "anonymous" sparkling reviews of their product.

Some reviews sound more like a sale pitch, then a customer review.
