How do I know the version of the DAC chip of a HM-801?

I heard that some HM-801 has the better PCM1704U-K chip while some has 1704U. I am about to buy a used one. How do I know which chip the 801 has??? Is it going to show up at the screen? Or do I need to open the 801 to check inside???

Try and contact Hifiman and ask that question.

Are you an owner?

I own a hifiman 601 and I'm not sure how you could tell what chip it has in it. Your best bet would be to contact them directly to ask this question.

I believe there were talk about switching to PCM1704U because of unstable supply issue back in the day (in Headfonia's review, not by Head-Direct). But as far as I know, all HM801 are using PCM1704U-K and was confirmed by Fang a year ago.

I think you are right. The official spec says 1704U-K

It's actually pretty easy to open and check the HM-801, I've checked a couple, and I have yet to see one that wasn't the 1704U-K.

^ Correct you are, on both statements.
