AUNE USB Dac Advice?

Hi, I'm just trying to figure out the basics of the world of high end audio and hoping somebody can help me. My first purchase was the AUNE Mini Headphone USB DAC (Mark 2).

Firstly, should an audio source plugged into the RCA inputs be routed out through the RCA outputs? I can get it to play through to the headphones when the switch is set to A, but I am not getting a signal coming out of the RCA outputs no matter what I try. I believe I had it coming out of the RCA outputs for a short moment, but it then stopped, which makes me think maybe it has blown a component? I think it was a faulty cable but I have since tried a number of other cables and sources.

Also, if anybody has some advice about the next step in terms of buying an amp and speakers that are at the lower end of the Hi Fi price range but represent good value for money? Cheers in advance for any help. Sam.

Heya,

Source -> (USB or SPDIFF) -> Aune USB DAC -> Headphone directly into front headphone jack.

You shouldn't even be touching the RCA's on the back unless your input is from a portable player that does mini-jack to 2x RCA's. But since you bought a USB DAC I figure you bought it for a computer to use. So again, you don't even touch the RCA's. Flip the switch on the front to USB. Plug in your headphones to the headphone jack. Listen.

Very best,

Thanks MalVeauX, yes you are right that I bought it mainly to use the USB out from a computer to play flacs. However, I also wanted my girlfriend to be able to plug her mp3 player via mini-jack to 2x RCA's into it and listen through the speakers as a secondary use.

I have a feeling from the (badly written) manual that this can't be done, though for a moment there I swear it was outputting to the speakers!

Thanks again for the advice.

In "A" mode it will take RCA analog in, and produce RCA analog out.  Right?

I think it should. Sadly, mine does not!

With this product you will only get an output from the RCA out if your input is digital. You will not get an output if your input is into the RCA in. IOW, no RCA in/out. This product only converts digital to analogue.

Very nice dac/amp incidentally. Worthwhile perservering with it.

I second the positive opinion of the Aune. For the money, it's unbeatable. The RCA outputs will only respond to digital signals (USB in my case) and if you using powered speakers, the volume defaults to the external power source.
