Are you sure it is the voice coil? The cables are notoriously bad on the SA5000. I had to fix mine. Be sure that it isn't the cable.

Thats across the driver? NOT at the plug?

If the drivers are busted the best way to fix them is throw them in the trash and buy new ones.

its rarely possible to achieve a long lasting fix that does not mess up the sound.

Glad to hear you got them going in spite of it. Most people who have similar problems dont have the same luck as you did.

Yes!
Edit it is not simple. And as far as I know, many people had to buy new headphone when encountering similar problems.
For similar cases have made the success rate is> 50%.

My left driver just broke too. Is there any way to buy a replacement driver? I don't think I can even send them in for repair because these were apparently not sold in Canada and thus the Sony website doesn't let me try to arrange for repairs. I'd really like to avoid trashing these headphones.

Well done on fixing it, it's a good headphone.

Zenja, are you sure the driver is broken?

The SA-5000 is notorious for bad cable connections. I've had to fix mine. If it's just the cable, then the repair is a simple solder joint.

Do you know how to open them up and test whether the voicecoil is shorted?

I recabled them a long time ago. The resistance of the cables from end to end is fine. The resistance across the driver pads (with the cups disassembled) is ~infinite. I'm pretty sure it's done for :(

After some searching, I see some places claiming to have the drivers, though none in stock. I wonder if they could actually get them or if it's just there for the hell of it and not worth trying. I'm not sure if the driver is even easily replaceable though. I just saw the service manual which shows you can twist the driver out to remove it, though i didn't notice that being a possibility when I looked at it before reading that. edit: I have the driver removed now, so they are replaceable if I can find another to buy.

Some places that may or may not sell the drivers:
