Recommendations for fan of Debussy?

Thread Starter

Hey everyone, I'm not a huge classical fan, and a lot of the normal, popular classical stuff I'm not a huge fan of (a lot of Beethoven, Mozart etc, I do like some of that stuff though), but I love the beautiful piano in Debussy's works (Claire De Lune) etc. Yiruma I think his name is, he also has some very pretty piano pieces I enjoy (River Flows In You).

Also stuff like this:

What can you guys recommend that I check out?

If you like Debussy Ravel may be right up your alley.  Within Debussy, I'd check out the Suite Bergamasque (of which Claire De Lune is a part,) the children's corner suite, his preludes and arabesques.  All beautiful works for piano.  I think Pascal Roge has a cd with debussy's full works for piano.

First of all, Sigur Rós is brilliant. There's a ton of modern piano music that you'll propably like, based upon the songs in the first post. Ravel is defenitely one of them, others are Craig Armstorng's piano works CD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM4mnX66ncg), Goldmund's Corduroy Road and Malady of Elegance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY_ezR5nz8w), Dustin 'o Halloran's piano solo's (1 and 2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx6gr_Ch9x8), gonzalez' solo piano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLZ95qyB8B4), Nils Frahm's Wintermusik and The Bells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysUpTeYO80E), Olafur Arnalds' Found Songs (you might like his album "and they've escaped the weight of darkness because Sigur Ros is your favorite band ever) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYIfiQlfaas) and of course, Philip Glass' Solo Piano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il4VDf-ugPI). Oh and just in case you're not familliar with Erik Satie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7DBoiyBoJ8).

There is a bargain box set of Ravel by Dutoit that is exactly what you want.

You may also want to try Faure, though his best stuff is the songs (imo), there are a number of instrumental works too.

Gil Shahan's "The Faure Album" on eMusic and the Florestan Trio did a recording of Debussy, Ravel and Faure .

Thanks so much for the suggestions so far guys, I will be sure to check them all out!

Olafur Arnalds has actually been on rotation for a few of years now as well, I have a lot of Icelandic music as a result of Sigur Ros, most of it is so incredibly beautiful and creative.

Try the piano works by Gabriel Faure, in particular the Nocturnes.  Faure is half a generation elder than Debussy, hence his harmonies are not as daring, but his music does capture the elusive "French" atmosphere.

Turn-of-century Spanish composers are widely influenced by French Impressionism.  You may try, for example, the piano concerto "Night in the Garden of Spain" by Manuel de Falla, or a selection of miniatures by Federico Mompou.

Another of the French Impressionist composers (who hasn't been mentioned so far) is Erik Satie. My favourite piano piece of his is Gnossienne No. 1. If you like the style, just look up other Impressionist Composers, there's certainly a few I'm sure you'll enjoy.

a wonderful recommendation. I have Satie’s complete piano work played by Cristina Ariagno; the Gnossiennes are my favourite tunes of his work.
