im starting to collect some 12au7 tubes for the soha II and CTH amps im working on, and ive been kind of skeptical about buying tubes from ebay. so i thought it might be helpful to have a tube tester. i want it to be able to match tubes, and ive read that in order to do this, the tester must be able to check the mutual transconductance. i found this design. have any of you guys have had any experience with it?

I've heard good things about the Transcendent Sound Tube Analyzer, so you may want to add that to your short list. The kit runs $699.

You might want to look around the Transcendent Forum (same site) which should have some members who use it.
