They were my very first >$100 headphones and I loved them when I first had them. Picked up a pair of AD700s to try out an open can and the difference in sound quality was huge. Not to say they share a similar sound signature, but the LP2s simply just had nothing going for them. Muddy but substantial bass, very recessed mids and uninspired highs. I personally would not recommend the LP2s over the similarly priced M80s or for $100 extra, the M100s which are extremely fun headphones for bassheads.

But this thread is ~$200 BASS HEAD focused, the M-80s are not to be considered bass head cans, and the M-100s are $300.

As for your experience with the LP2s, I will most likely have a similar one. I love mine right now, them also being my first high end headphone above even $50. But I plan to make my next purchase a pair of DT 770 Pro 250 Ohm, along with a Fiio E11. Ive heard MANY people say that the 770 Pro 250 is an amazing bass head set, while not losing the fidelity for highs and mids like the LP2s do.

Personally I wish I would have payed more attention and gotten the M-100s or the UE6000 instead of the LP2s, but its too late now.

I also didn't like LP2s and don't concider them to pack a sound quality worth anywhere their asking price, gave them about 25 hrs of burn in and then used for a day or two and returned. I wouldn't call the mids recessed but the highs are very veiled, if highs are significantly veiled then the mids seem forward in comparision but ofc the big bass is still there but if I need to EQ up the highs about 3.5 - 5.5dB in 8 - 16kHz range to get it up with the mids then I wouldn't call mids recessed, that's for V-shape headphones (end of rant as I see the term "recessed mids" used way too often improperly). A better description would be heavy bass boost, mids on roughly neutral level and veiled highs. ie a downwards slope signature, very warm and smooth sound. Since frequency response is about balance, if the bass is boosted and the highs are veiled then it's impossible to be recessed, it's there in-between.

The problem I had with them except the veiled highs was a resonance spike there around 3.5kHz making some female vocals sound unnatural with certain tones like they would distort a little (think 70's radio sound) and bass lacked texture and definition, a bit too boomy and slightly bleeding midbass. But boy these pack a lot of punch in the bass though, I would say they pack a bit less subbass but slightly more midbass compared to a XB500 for example, they hit with more authority in the midbass tones.

+50 on this..

I just got a pair for $179 (recent price drop at BestBuy from $199)

I didn't actually spend $179 either.. thanks to RZ points and gift certificates I paid $109!! haha

But yes... throw these in there. It would be a disservice to not have these mentioned in a basshead guide.

Were you factoring in the $20 gift card they were giving with purchase a couple of weeks ago making them 180? I've been waiting for a deal on these but missed that. And no one puts them on sale. I just figured I'd get em from Amazon since I've got Prime and no tax. Trying to hold out for another deal.

Naw, they stopped the gift card deal online.. and bestbuy.com still has them listed at $199

But I went to my local Bestbuy Monday 2/25 and saw that they were on sale for $179 and pulled the trigger.

I'm going to Best Buy again today to look at some home theater systems.. I'll take a pic of the price while I'm there. (Heading there in about 20 minutes actually lol)

I'll try and get the SKU/Serial#s incase you wanted to bring it to your BB or electronic store to price match.  (if you're interested of course)

Dang! Maybe I'll head out there tonight. I wonder if they'll price match themselves from another state?

Well.. we're both in florida.. and about 3-4 hours apart.. so it shouldn't be much of an issue I would think. Hope not. These suckas are awesome.

You rule man! They are indeed on sale, just picked em up. Can't wait to get home!

I echo your opinions on the DT770. I heard them recently at a meet, and they're really not the boom-cannons they're made out to be. I heard lots of nice, tight, powerful impact.

Nice!! What are your initial impressions? I *thought* I was a hardcore basshead.. but I sort of preferred the passive mode to the active mode during most of my basshead listening (electronic music/hip hop) which really surprised me.. For the first time.. I preferred the clarity over the rumble and thump for those genre's. I don't know who I am anymore. :(

Lol, I love how you classify the dt990 pro 250s as bass head cans for those confused about thier "aural orientation" I [as an owner of the xb700 [modded] AND dt 990 pro... will say the 990 pros are a big boi's bass head can as you get TONS OF BASS and everything elese.

Still I use my dt 990s for my Vocal EDM, and as I bass head I love TONS OF BASS with EDM or Techno. In addition, I HATE EXTRA BASS for everything that is not emd q.q [so I guess I'm more Audiophile more than bass head]

still nice list!

Too much bass for everything else like classical, rock, etc are the mids highs and treble decent, like better than the m50s?

The DT990 is a whole step above the M50. They're nothing like the Sony XB-series, where the bass overpowers the mids and highs.
