wich of these 2 creative cards would you choose for general use?

Hello there,

I know there is many different thoughts on this subject but i have a question about wich one of these would be a better option for me I am able to buy these for close to nothing , and that said i know there is way better cards out there but considering my modest budget and other components i think these will be plenty for me:

I use Microlab SOLO6C speakers and Sennheiser HD595 earphones for listening to music , movies and some gaming once in a while.

currently I have a integrated sound card on a gigabyte P67 board ( Realtek ALC889 i quess ), I have used creative cards before with my old speakers and i dont know if i just overthought it but they really did sound better with more base and perhaps even more clear then the integrated stuff.

i have 2 cards to choose from:

 creative sb0670

 creative sb0460

Any thoughts or ideas to help me choose would be great, but maybe it doesnt really matter in wich one i take , anyways hope u can help.

Does it have to be any of those two? They're basically the same card in theory, with one being a retail version and another an OEM version, with the OEM version having a different device ID, different card layout and far poorer support. So, the lesser of two evils is SB0460.

Anyway, for how much can you get it?

Hum, for such a low price, just get the SB0460, get acquainted with its sound and how the card performs, and later on you can always upgrade to a newer model, like the X-Fi Titanium that can be had between $50 and $80, which amounts for less money in EUR. Oh, and try to avoid cards with integrated amps, as you won't have the same flexibility when it comes to gear matching.

Thats the thing i am kind of satisfied atm with even my intergrated thingie, and i am in no hurry to buy a random soundcard, but if something great ( well atleast for my standards and modest gear ), I can just keep my eyes open for X-FI titanium if that one is far superior to the sb0460 or any other models from the creative line you could think of that i should keep an eye out for, cause these seem to be available here 2nd hand more often then lets say asus cards , anyways i appreciate your input!

Keep in mind that I mentioned the X-Fi Titanium as being the base X-Fi model with a second generation X-Fi chip, unlike X-Fi cards like XtremeAudio, that are lower priced than the X-Fi Titanium but aren't real X-Fi cards, rather previous generation rebadged cards, without the DSP chip, hardware acceleration and most of the features that define what a X-Fi card is, actually being lower than either of the cards you mentioned.

Basically, think of the following, you have the SB0460 at the low end, the Creative X-Fi Titanium as a modern and fully featured card, an Auzentech X-Fi Forte that is an officially modded second generation X-Fi card with higher quality components, and then you have the Creative X-Fi Titanium HD which has a third generation X-Fi chip, a card that was redesigned with high quality parts and geared towards the audiophile crowd. The cards are ordered in both price and quality. Since I don't know where you get your prices, these can serve as reference for a future purchase.

You have not mentioned your OS, but  olders SB don´t use to have strong support to Vista and Win7.

Both cards support Vista/7 through stock and modded drivers.

Thanks again all, but theres an additional issue with the integrated sound card i currently have and that is that it wont really feed enough juice to my sennheiser HD595 earphones so they are kind of quiet would that creative I mentioned before do a better job on that or do i really need a headphone amp ? and what would u reccomend for an amp? cheers

Those headphones do benefit a bit from proper amping, which should be added externally in order for you to be able to pick exactly what you want, just like for when you plan on doing future upgrades. Both PA2V2 and Fiio E11 are both good starter amps that can be had for low prices, and will be more than enough to power your HD595.
