Magnum 2.5 (partial cup treatment) CSD Waterfall Plots

(and RS1 for comparison)

The Magnums definitely have some major improvements over RS1 driver:

 

  1. Shorter and consistent duration of ringing at 2kHz and 5kHz. Broader ringing at 5kHz.
  2. Amazingly excellent driver matching. This can't be an easy thing.
  3. No ringing at 9kHz (this is one of those things that contributes to making RS1 difficult for me)
  4. Overall faster in the critical 5-10kHz harmonic region.

 

Hey! I'm still wearing them... Grados don't usually last this long.

Yup, it's comforting to know that there are people out there that still give a rat's ass about the little things like this. This puts the Symphones Magnums in the same category as the STAX SR009 and Sennheiser HD800 in terms of driver matching.

Indeed. I remember those HD800's were impressive for that as well.

How well matched are standard Grado? I remember their website advertising at worst plus/minus 0.05 dB for any headphones of the RS/GS/PS lines.

I'm skeptical about that claim.

Were both the inner and outer cups metal? If the innner cups are metal, are they metal like the 325is/MS2i cups or are they different? Rhydon changed the metal for V3 cups, for reasons I forget (and I can't find the email where he explained it) but possibly to deal with the ringing.

You should try orphan tears and hens teeth along with a pinch of fairy dust.

Well if we start with some powdered metal/alloys and assume the witches teeth are a ceramic compound and the unicorn tears as some sort of binder/flux, form it all together via sintering... actually that could work quite well.

Oh goodness no, orphan tears contain far too much salt and would encourge corrosion in the metal.

Ah, powdered metal.  Reminds me of when GM started casting engine blocks using the stuff for Saturn.  I think connecting rods were first done universally though in auto.  Saturn probably went under when we ran out of Unicorns.  If someone can send purrin a witch we'll pull her teeth and measure her lamentations.

These are the 325i cups and rather also my Magnums. I was actually unaware Anaxilus was going to give them to purrin to get measurements done when I sent them to Tyll but oh well..there are two sets of data for this particular headphone now :P I would be interested in the reasoning for the changing of the metal for v3 cups if you can find it.

 

purrin, I take it you like these headphones which is good. I really like mine (well kinda have to like them to spend money on modding them) so glad you like them although Tyll wasn't the biggest fan of them :p
