Is the measuring equipment transportable? If so maybe we could find a quiet place at the upcoming meet to measure some of my headphones you don't have in your database.

It would be most interesting to see how sr-omega compares to sr-009. As well as Orpheus and R10.

Symphones Magnum v2.5 / Upgrade to Grado:
Pre-measurement impressions / notes (Magnum v2.5):
First noted bass. Thought it had a lot of similarities to HP1000 bass. Noted typical Grado shoutyness - seemed a little bit worse than most other Grados. Had trouble identifying points of ringing - guessed at 2k and 5k, but with broader ridges than the uglier razor blades. The shoutyness / 2k ringing was of more concern to me. Very smooth and refined in treble. Little bit too much bass for me. As I get older, I have more trouble with unbalanced signatures -that is the peaks in the midrange - so put them on for an hour to adjust to FR. Amazingly didn't feel need to take headphones off - in other words, I didn't feel like the Magnum was attacking my eardrums the way other Grados do.
Quick FR graph for now - processing CSDs in a bit...
Red: Magnum L
Green: Magnum R
Purple: RS1 L
Blue: RS1 R
Some notes on FR graph:
- Magnum left and right drivers are extremely well matched!!! Evidently the guy is not BS'ing you when he says matches them! This should totally be appreciated.
- Magnum v2.5 have more midbass than RS1
- Peaks at 2k and 5k are tamed a bit - not as high as RS1
- Treble response is smoother and more linear past 8kHz compared to RS1
- Magnums were measured with yellow quarter-modded reverse Senn pads. I tried all of the pads and variations, and these pads gave them the most neutral response.

purrin, I'm assuming those are mine?
If so they aren't the full magnums but rather in 325i shells. According to Currawong the things that Rhydon does to the shells also affects the way the sound in a good way but haven't heard them so wouldn't know. Although I'm thinking of using these to a FWJ mod by Martin Custom Audio and then using the shells for a v4 full magnum.
Also you are definitely right about driver matching based on your FR graph..that's pretty impressive actually

Dunno. Are they? Anax handed them over to me today for measurement. The inner cups are aluminum and the owner had the yellow quarter-modded pads reversed (which is really the way to go on these.) The headphone is terminated with 1/8" DHC mini-plug. If they are yours, I would definitely recommend the wood cups to take away some of the shoutyness and de-sharpen the ringing. The metal doesn't play well with the driver response.

Yes and yes. Metal for Joe and wood for John is my take.

purrin, would you be interested in them after the mod as well? Although it would be more of a complete transformation with just the drivers the same pretty much.. I could have them sent to Anaxilus (or you) and then to me or another head-fi member in California if he's interested.
I was planning on Anaxilus and another Cali head-fi member to be the last person to hear these and then possibly after the mods if they were interested. Although I'm not sure where Magnums would fit in Joe and John Grados :P

Of course he would. You should see him when he runs out of things to measure. Not a pretty sight. >.<- purrin

Wood for ringing drivers - for sure. These Magnum 2.5s are 75% John and 25% Joe. They still ring.

Sure, go ahead and send the woodies to me once they are converted. I'll cover the shipping costs back. Martin's cups are awesome.
CSDs on the way...

Quote:ooohh :) Well you do have plenty of time considering 2-3 more weeks after you send it off it will be going to Martin and then he's basically building it from ground up so that will take some time so I imagine you got 2-3 months minimum?
