Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread - Page 64

I am hoping you can someone can help me: I have upgraded my 7th gen/iPod classic (which used to have a 160GB HD on board) with a 240GB PATA hard drive (+ a thicker back) & everything works fine. However, I noticed that the headphone jack & hold switch both now have a slight gap between the plastic & the case near the back/bottom edge of the ipod (due to the fact that the 160GB iPod tapers/curves in toward the bottom & therefore hold button & plastic piece on the outside of the headphone jack are angled/tapered down, to accomodate for the curve in the 160GB ipod's back, whereas the 240GB iPod's back is thicker & therefore does not taper/curve until after the plastic piece(s) on the headphone jack & hold button ends). Therefore, my question is: Is there a hold switch/headphone jack/cable out there/available, which does not taper/curve (at least as much) & therefore will fit properly into my 240GB 7th Gen iPod Classic ? If the answer is yes, I would be most appreciative, if someone/anyone can direct me (specifically) to an eBay auction, other store/website, or tell me which exact iPod model [again, please be specific: iPod generation, & size of original hard drive(s)] I need to acquire a hold switch/headphone jack/cable from - Thank you very much for your time - RD

I did a quick search for an mSATA to ZIF Adapter at ebay.  I picked the one which indicated in the description that this was suitable for the Ipod, and able to supply the proper voltage for the mSATA.  Ordered hoping that it will work - and it did. Some are cheap others are expensive but they seem to be pretty standard.   I got an mSATA to USB/2.5" drive Adapter, as well.  This adapter will be handy when formatting the mSATA, which you will need to do beforehand,  I formatted the mSATA using the OSX Disk Utility.  I selected:  1 Partition and  Mac OS Extended (journaled)

Ok so is the adapter  "http://www.amazon.com/Micro-SATA-Cables-Adapter-Toshiba/dp/B009BA5JU6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361611368&sr=8-1&keywords=Micro+SATA+Cables+-+mSATA+SSD+to+40+Pin+ZIF+Adapter+Card+as+Toshiba+or+Hitachi+ZIF+HDD"?  Is that and the crucial msata drive all I need for a mod on the 7th gen ipod?

Cheers

Thank you for reminding me to get the mSATA to USB adapter; although I know the drive needs to be formatted, I still was going to forget that part!

If you don't have the plastic pry-tool, you can make one out of old toothbrush handles.  Chop-off the brush head, and cut a sharp edge on the plastic ends (using a cutter, scissors, or a sharp knife,) that should work just fine.

I can't say for sure, as I did not get mine from Amazon.  But they look similar.  Not sure about the 7th gen, as I used the 5.5 gen.

These worked for me, and I hope it works for you if you decide to go a similar path.  But if it doesn't work for you,  please don't blame me.

Alas I don't own any old plastic toothbrushes any more since I've been using a model that has a removable & renewable brush head with organic fibre bristles for quite a while now redface.gif ; I do however still have a plastic pry-tool, albeit a bit worn out from my other modding adventures, but it doesn't matter as I'll be getting a new one free with the new battery I'll be ordering alongside.

Thank you for linking directly the items you went for; that the iPod is listed as compatible does inspire confidence indeed, and that USB enclosure does seem like a good future-proof idea too. I will bare those in mind when ready to order all the parts. And don't worry, I wouldn't dream of blaming you or anyone if it didn't work.

Just type "headphone jack + hold switch for iPod Video 80GB" and you'll get useful results.

Buying a battery will get you one or two pry tools for free, but if you order the tools on their own they're usually $3-5 each. So it might also be worth shopping for a cheapo battery that includes a tool, even if you don't need a battery...

Btw, the tools are called spudgers, in case you want to search for them on amazon or ebay.

Hey guys any ideas about rockboxed ipod 5g's skipping unfinished tracks (FLAC's) during playback? I can't think of anything other than a bad drive (HDD or SSD), but I could be wrong.

have u tried another CF? or maybe revert back to stock HDD's? just to try and see whether it's a storage problem or not

No other CF available at this time. I also had skipping on another stock 5.5g/80GB. It appears skipping is not something new with the 5g's if you google the topic. But there seems no solutions that can be found.

Just wondering if anyone who experienced the same issue found a solution.

Greetings from Australia!

I've just read the entire thread. It took a little while and was confusing in parts but worth it.

I was looking at upgrading my 5g 30gb iPod to one of the newer 160gb Classics until I stumbled upon this thread.

I've now decided I'll spend some money on it instead.

I'll be looking at getting this adaptor.

It has already been mentioned further up the page and works apparently.

The hard drive I'm not certain about. I was thinking this one would be good.

I also might try and get a clear iVues case from Rapid Repair in the states as well. The shipping will probably cost more than the case.

Let me know what you all think! smily_headphones1.gif

Your first hard drive link is to an 2.5 inch SATA drive which will not work.

The correct one is your second link, the mSATA

Thanks for the reply mate. I'll get the second hard drive then. I'm not sure what I was thinking with the other one. I'll need a new battery as well. I've had it playing today and it will be lucky to make 8 hours.
