you said: " as in its just passing the signal through", if it has a chip is it doing more than passing the signal trough, its processing it, you did you really mean then?
You can post links, but not images i think, but if not could you PM me the link please?

re-read the post:

"So it hangs on the quality of the SD to CF adapter.  So far, there's only been one report of it not working with just such an upgrade, but the user reported that the unit itself was faulty and that it would not work properly in any device.  Furthermore, they had subsequent success with an exact replacement."

Yes, it's obvious that the ZIF adapter is passive and the CF to SD adapter is active.

Also, the SD Card just came in the mail...  Time to run tests on it to verify that it's legit...

Oh sorry, i miss-read and interpreted it as you said the SD to CF was passive, my bad.
good luck on testing.

Could you please link me that SD card, the price is great if its not fake.

Could be one of these : https://www.amazon.com/128GB-Micro-Memory-Quality-Adapter/dp/B01HM93C38/ref=pd_sbs_147_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01HM93C38&pd_rd_r=Z2XD7ARHPSNCPPMHGSVC&pd_rd_w=9Zxky&pd_rd_wg=QXdFl&psc=1&refRID=Z2XD7ARHPSNCPPMHGSVC

Likely as not is a QC rejected 128 gig card.  They've been flooding in for a while now.  There's a couple dozen listings like this across the Amazons, ebay, and aliexpress...

most of the reviews say its fake, but QC rejected cards for not meeting the required speeds would be great for the ipods since we dont need that much speed only storage.

Nope, it's not that one (and those are indeed fake)...

It's a full-size SD card, not a microSD...

And it tests perfectly...

Need a USB3 reader with a modern chip to do speed tests, but speed isn't important.

And if the SD to CF adapter tests good on the iPod Classic 6 and 7, then there's also a dual microSD version of them...  It would really give Tarkan's products a run for their money.

When I saw "new production", I thought that some new battery technology had arrived. But Tarkan's article from 06/2016 is still relative? The most one could hope for from a replacement battery is 1800mah?

The 1900mAh battery off Aliexpress is trackable to this manufacturer -
E405280 is the battery code, average cell capacity is a little over 1900mAh from what they've listed.  That's probably the only honest battery out of the three large capacity.  The 2000mAh batteries from the ebay listing don't show markings, and the 3000mAh cells aren't traceable to any manufacturer with public data.  If anybody has one with markings on them let me know and I'll try and search for them.

Isn't it nice to have a working fake SD card? You order it, if it's fake you open a dispute to get a (partial) refund but if it works in your iPod you actually don't care about speed.

It's not a "working fake SD card".

And it should perform at Class 10 speed.

And the results are reproducible -- which means to say that every single piece of this particular brand will test good.  It's just an inexpensive SD card being sold at wholesale prices.

The most inexpensive big brand 128GB full-size SD cards sell for around $40 USD.

It's not that difficult to imagine that their wholesale price is actually $15 and the markup another $25.

So someone on the internet is purchasing unbranded SD cards in bulk, and then selling them for $2-$3 profit.

If everything works out with the adapter then someone with full posting privileges should do a write-up post with more details and pics.

So the card actually passed h2testw?

Looking at suppliers - you can get 128gb SDXC for quite cheap if you're willing to buy in bulk and deal with import/export fees.  $4 a piece for 1000 pieces was about the best deal from "reputable" factory direct suppliers, although there were several cheaper if you didn't want any accessory/packaging/branding or felt like going with a seller with no listed transaction history.

There's a seller offering 1 year warranty and guarantee on 10 pieces of 128 gb SDXC shipping in full retail boxes.  $10 a piece, min 10 pieces list price.  Alibaba is a mysterious and wonderful land if your up for an adventure in reselling...

Good observations...

And they do in fact test perfectly in H2testw:

Warning: Only 121065 of 121066 MByte tested.
Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
Writing speed: 10.7 MByte/s
Reading speed: 13.3 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4

The speed is low because of the very old card reader (Teac CA-200 from 2007), but again, speed's not important in an iPod.

Anyone ever try returning something on Alibaba or Aliexpress? If you bought from a Chinese seller, you have to ship it back to China to get your refund. You're at the mercy of the seller providing a legit return address. If tracking shows that the item never got delivered, they close the case against you and rule for the seller. Ebay is a lot more lenient on returns: a buyer just has to provide a tracking number showing the item was picked up; tracking doesn't have to show that it actually makes it back to the Chinese address.

And even if the seller is honest and gives you a genuine return address, shipping back to China from the USA is very expensive. You might have to wait months for a refund depending on how long it takes for the package to make it back.
