OK, so I have a 6.5G 120GB Silver Classic, and bought a 160GB Black 7G awhile ago, but my music collection has grown beyond the 160GB capacity.  I want to do the 240GB Toshiba HDD swap, and want to know if I can just swap the backplates of my two Classics (put the 120GB's backplate on the 160GB to fit the 240GB HDD, and vice-versa)?  Also, can I just stick the 160GB drive into the older Classic and use it all, or will I be limited to 128GB?

Thanks all!

Just realized that my 6.5G backplate is the same thickness as my 7G... Dangit, so I have to also buy a thicker backplate for my 7G?  Where the heck do I find one?  I can't seem to find any in the U.S. on eBay?

Both the 5g and the 5.5g 30GB can take a 120GB HDD. I have done this three times so far flawlessly all using the TOSHIBA 120GB ZIF CE MK1234GAL drive.

My born 30GB 5g have installed a 160GB HDD in it, the motherboard is the first version not the 5.5th one.

Nice to know that's another option to upgrade the drive for ipod 5g. Interestingly the cost of that 160GB hdd runs about the same as the 240GB hdd.

The 120GB hdd is available for as low as $58 from eBay.

So... after thinking about this and thinking about which drive to replace my dead iPod (I think 6th gen? it's a 120 GB with aluminum front), I was about to buy a cheap ssd off ebay, but it appears not all of them work. For one, I would like to know how reliable these drives are in this config, specifically on 6/7 gens? Or even 5 gens. I'm thinking about getting the 128 GB version of the Supertalent drive, since that appears to be the tried and true SSD. It appears we are restricted to 1.8" (obviously) with 3.3V range.

Can everyone that got this working post their model, iPod firmware, SSD type, etc, and how many years they have been running it for? This thread is old, so I know you all are out there.

Here is the SATA LIF to ZIF adapter

Also, do the SATA LIF to ZIF connectors work on the iPod classic 6th/7th gen? It sounds like it doesn't work with Rockbox, but does it work with the stock iPod OS?

It looks like this, according to the link, might work with the quoted adapter.

Here is where someone used a similar Macbook Air ssd, but according to them, it's zif already.

EDIT:

This must have been the drive he used.

EDIT 2:

Doesn't look stock. The info in Lion says that one in EDIT 1 is a spec one. Dammit.

Were you ever able to get some sort of mSATA to work for either Rockbox or the standard iPod OS?

Hi all,

I am going to be starting a project, consisting of the following:

Ipod video 30g or 60g

I then aim to upgrade the battery, change the casing (assuming it is scratched etc), then upgrade the HDD

I am going to do one of the following:

1) 1.8" zif ssd 64gb

or

2) the adaptor to take a compact flash card, then get the compact flash adaptor which actually takes an SD card

option 2 seems to be the cheaper, and would an SD card work ok, or would there need to be any specific specs requirements? I'm currently looking at grade 10? 64gb SD's

thanks

If you want you can also try a straight SD to ZIF adapter.

Or if you will use CF to SD adapter I may suggest a DELOCK - 61796 That in spec can take up to 2TB SDXC in exFAT. Of course you need to format it in FAT32 for iPod and I'm unsure how will it behave in that  case.

Hi guys...i'm just starting into this branch of the hobby and have a few questions...I currently have a iPod with the CF mod. It has a 32GB flash card in it. I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the card to a 64GB or larger?

Sure. I have customized an iPod with a 64GB CF. If you have the dough for a 128GB, there's no reason it shouldn't work.

Thanks!

I was trading emails with Tarkan...the guy who sells the adapters...last night. He sent me the list of what cards are good and what ones are bad if you go the CF route. I asked him about the SD card route and he said he'll get back to me. I'm going to build a second 5.5 and attempt the DIYiMod...soldering the two wires on...etc. But..I'd like to know if we can make the SD card work...it's a much cheaper option than the 500 buck SSD option I think.

The 128GB CF card ran me something like $60. I'll be putting it in this week...

When you swap out the CF card and hook it up...what happens...does the ipod just go into restore mode...and then let it run?

I'm reading the whole thread...but am only up to P6...so sorry if I'm asking redundant questions guys!

Spoke to Tarkan today...he informed me that the SD card solution hasn't worked for him at all yet. Have any of you guys tried it?
