Hope is on the horizon however as tarkan is looking into developing an adapter that would allow use of the msata drives in 7th gen devices.  If you want ssd you will have to get a 5th gen and mod that.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that does help.  It just means I have to wait.  I got nothing but time, so there's no problem there.  And the iPod I have is new, so tearing into it is a little scary, especially since I haven't done it before.  Thanks for the heads up.

Replace battery with a new one from here:
http://www.milliamp.com

Install in iPod. Restore with iTunes. Install BeyondWind's RockBox update.

Load music in blocks no larger than 40g to avoid overheating. Enjoy.

Given there are so many questions about this on the forum, i repost to above info with the following update.

These mSata chips also work in the 5gen and 5.5gen ipod:
crucial 240g http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-240GB-mSATA-Internal-CT240M500SSD3/dp/B00BQ8RKT4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1402190308&sr=8-1&keywords=240+g+msata
BP4 240g. http://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-256GB-240GB-Bullet-Proof/dp/B00B3X73EE/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1402190418&sr=8-1-fkmr2&keywords=240+g+msata+bp4
(Excellent heat handling compared to crucial chips)
samsung EVO 1T http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MZ-MTE1T0BW-Internal-Single-Version/dp/B00HWHVNUU/ref=sr_1_20?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402190630&sr=1-20&keywords=Samsung+evo

The 6 and 7 gen are being tested. Look for Cmarti's posts for more info. For everyone with questions about upgrading their thin 6'or 7th gen, be patient. Key word: Tarkan.

The mSata upgrade works best with the RockBox firmware. The native iPod firmware has difficulty with databases above 60k entries, and since it is designed to work with lossy files, chips with more than 240g space have databases exceeding the native ipod firmware "limits". The different generations handle some media but not others, and even different companies producing media meeting the ipod specifications do not work the same in each generation. More info on SD, SSD and HDD configurations can be found by searching this forum.

I use these metal spudgers to open the iPod, they are very good. They helped me open my new 7th gen iPod without causing any damage to the back cover or front cover.

I myself prefer these plastic openers from iFixit for a few dollars. Doesn't scratch the iPod.

Wanted to provide an update on how the 7th gen 480gb iFlash-Sata iPod Classic is working.

It's working perfectly, the battery life is insanely long with the 2,000mAh battery.

No hiccups and I was told that the release candidate for the adapter will soon be released.

cmarti,

Thank you for your update!

Would you please test the Tarkan iFlash-SATA + 480GB SSD in a 5.5 gen? I think many people will be interested in that combo.

I know Tarkan said that the new adapter may be less stable in 5.5 gen. But when he said "less stable", did he mean that it is less than perfect (which I do not mind), or did he mean that it does not work well (which would be a problem for me). I would be happy as long as Tarkan's new adapter works (in a 5.5 gen) better than those generic (e.g., eBay/Amazon) adapters.

Also, you 480GB is Samsung EVO and you don't have the 1TB SSD anymore , correct?
My goal is to have a 1TB 5.5 gen with Tarkan's SATA adapter.

Thanks again!

I did use the Tarkan iFlash-Sata adapter in a 5.5th gen iPod today (I have two adpaters) and it worked fine, the 480gb card is a Crucial because the Samsungs didn't work with any of my iPods. Don't know why but I used five different adapters and four different iPods with no luck.

^ You said on page 203 that you have ordered a 1TB Samsung EVO, which should get to you within 2 days. Have you tried that out? Did the 1TB fail just like the 500GB EVO?

I also went back and re-read your previous posts. On page 204, you were using a Milliamp battery and said that Tarkan's new adapter with potentiometer has a higher profile. So it looks like a 2000 mAh battery still fits there, as long as you use back cover of a 80GB 5.5 gen, correct?

Thank you very much.

I received from Amazon the Samsung 500gb and the 1tb cards but they didn't work with any of my iPods.

The Crucial card worked with both Tarkan adapters, when I used the modified card I had to use the Milliamp battery but when i switched to the normal adapter then the 2000mAh fitted.

I use the fat cover with the 2000mAh battery because of the battery and yes you must use the fat cover if you use the modified adapter.

It's a shame that I didn't had any luck with the Samsung cards, I received another today but the seller wrongfully sent me a 128gb card instead of the 512gb card that I bought from him... Just me and my luck. But the 128gb Samsung card worked just fine with all adapters and all versions of iPods. Mind i currently have a 5th, 5.5th, 6th and 7th gen iPod for tests.

cmarti: Did you buy from Amazon at Amazon, or from some other guy at Amazon? I am offering to pay you the difference (Amazon vs other sellers), if you just get refund and buy directly from Amazon. That way we know for sure if Samsung SSD is not compatible (instead of lemons).

dr408517, since your Terapod with Samsung EVO SSD has been working well, would you please tell us from whom did you buy your 1TB SSD? Thank you.

I bought them from Amazon warehouse, it was used but passed all tests on the PC. I already sent back the 500gb and the 1tb cards to Amazon.

dr408517 is building a third iPod and he is having issues with the card he got this time... It is also a 1tb Samsung chip

So I installed a new higher capacity in my 5.5g ipod video, which seemed to work.  At least I could boot the unit and connect it to the PC.

Of course I managed to break the video screen in the process, and it now bleeds and can't be read.  Great op art however.  I threw in the towel and sent it in to a specialist repair facility for a new screen.

So I may get to the tarkan SD adaptor eventually, but breaking the screen reduced some of my enthusiasm.

Why the screen broke?
