Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread - Page 196

Man, I definitely need to do an msata and Rockbox. So much of my music is purchased through iTunes. Will that play on Rockbox? Also will my playlist transfer over?

On another note, I got my ALO amp wallet today. And I love it. My Griffin plastic clear case was cracking. I do want to find another one as I liked the clear plastic case when I velcro the iMod to the Fiio E17 amp.

@DMinor, The one question I have with regards to the ALO amp wallet is how do you deal with the UHA 6S power switch being so recessed? I don't want the velcro to wear prematurely undoing the strap. For now I leave a small gap, and use my pinky to flip the switch. Also do you turn off the charge switch when not charging the amp? For now I leave it off. Also I'd love to be able to use the iPods "hold" button, but again don't want to undo and redo the velco constantly. Guess I can accept that as a trade off.

Anyone know if a regular iPod Classic case with fit the 5.5G iPod 80GB? The iPod is so old i have a hard time finding a decent case. I like the Griffin clear case as it works with my clear iVue and shows off the iMod aspect. If I can use an iPod Classic case, it may be easier to find a clear case.

Here is a pic. I was playing around with my silver capless LOD and my ALO Copper 18 LOD with Caps. ALO LOD is the one pictured obviously.

New guy here who doesn't want to read 1000 posts... would someone quickly bring me up to speed on what is possible?  I have a latest ipod classic off ebay that I use in my Altima via usb connection to listen to music in my car.  i can't fit all my music on the ipod ofcourse nor can i play the lossless tracks in my collection without aac conversion.  is there anything i can do to better my setup without having to know lots of stuff or be a soldering iron master?  i don't mind using an iron just keeping it simple is best.

oh and is this rockbox thing compatible with in dash usb type players like my 2013 Altima?  i probably won't be using it outside of the car if ever but if this works i might invest in another ipod classic off ebay and do one up with all the tricks for real portable use.  i use my sony 7520 on the road so an amp isn't necessary but if there are other mods to improve sound that would be nice.  assuming the car usb connection howver is passing the files digtally and so these mods might not change the sound through the car.

im interested in this thread because a high capacity high res ipod classic is long overdue by apple.  might be nice to mod my own.

I had the same headache with unplugging and replugging ipod until I discovered the simulator lol

To start my theme you have to use rockbox 3.13 not the latest developer build nor the ssd build. just select day mode or night mode , you may have to clear the background manually in settings, I don’t remember – it has to be black. there are other configs ive included play with them if you like and to get everything back to normal just select day or night again. Hold down menu for bass and treble . when eq is on the screen shows slightly different info – this was done because rb stutters when eq is on same time as volume visualizers . the developers know about this and have no clue how to fix it.

The lower 20% of the volume also show the full scale of the line out volume. I came up with the headphone volume 100% scale using my ears so 25% 50% 75% 100% is actually what it “sounds” like and not what ipod decided is accurate.

When you take the headphone out or cut power it pauses automatically and tunrs off after 3 mins. Plug the headphones in or give it power again it resumes . power up , then it starts up on its own which is great for the car.

Some people say the wps is not pretty (that’s relative of course) but it is EXTREMELY functional and practical.

Let me know if any questions/comments.

You might want to Save your config settings before hitting day mode or night mode. enjoy!

Awesome, thanks for uploading!  I am checking it out now.  You have some cool stuff going on here, I am going to have to take everything apart and figure it all out.  I will probably have a few questions for you then!

Did you pull these fonts from another skin?  I really wanted to use an anti-aliased helvetica font for my track time in Redux, but the only way to do it would have been to download the rockbox source code and compile a command line tool called "convttf".  I tried downloading the source code, but I have no idea what I am doing, the tutorials seem outdated and I couldn't get past the part where you use the rockbox mirror and install the rockbox files.  I really would like to do a bunch of fonts for futures skins.  Another guy went through and anti-aliased the droidsans font, so I used that.

Using the Milliamp 850mah without any problems so far with daily use for the last two plus weeks.

TeraPodU2 uses a 650mah thin battery. We will see how this works out.

Looks good!!  That is a ton of music.  You digging Redux?!  Any feedback on it?

Check out some of my older posts. You'll find them helpful. I tested every storage media (except the CF card) and every workable configuration of Gen 2, 5, 5.5, 6, and 7. The only reliable configuration I found the best configuration for the car was the modified Gen 6/7 with a Kingspec 128gb. A Tarkan 128gb SD will also work in the 5/6/7 mods, but sometimes has trouble with drop outs. The mSata mods draw too much power, and the Tarkan 256gb SD mods are not reliable. I own a Toyota with the USB Apple interface.

I have not tested a completely lossless loaded iPod with the car yet, since the stock iTunes only uses aac, and the car will not work with Rockbox. Eventually, i will get around to it though. redface.gif

Does anyone know if there are any issues using this mSATA configuration with the iPod's stock firmware? I'm not certain I want to get into the whole Rockbox thing, but I also don't want to find out the iPod won't work well with mSATA using regular iPod firmware.

More specifically, is there a capacity/drive size limit when using the stock firmware, such as 240 or 480gb?

I am currently stalled out on a 6th Gen.Classic build using a 256gb SDXC card due to the CF-SD adapter being incompatible after about 130gb transferred, the whole thing becomes corrupted.

As another post already put it, I could use the cheap eBay ZIF-mSATA adapter now and swap it for Tarkan's version when that becomes available.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or warnings about using the stock firmware in terms of problems I might encounter.

cool glad you found it interesting...

i think the big anti alised font came from a android rockbox theme but i dont remember. i dont convert or create fonts myslef - tried once did not work. good big fonts are hard to find and they are very important for when the player is in the car and 3 feet from your face and your moving 60 mph lol

when you view my wps make sure your text reader does not word wrap the lines - they have to be long going across and have to be saved that way each time.

make sure you view the wps in rb ver 3.13 or else the eq is stuck at max for no reason and the pause does not turn red correctly. just so you know the latest version of the ipod simulator is not ver 3.13.

i  dont want to fix my wps untill 3.14 comes out, and i dont think that will be anytime soon. it seems the developers at rb dont care about new features like they once did years back.

i have a nice font collection from the 11 years i have been using rockbox, i will share it with you.  please tell me after you have down loaded it so i can remove it.

i think there are anti alised fonts are in folders other then the anti alise folder . you will have to check some how.

enjoy

I just tight those two straps a little bit loose leaving enough space so I can power on with my index finger (right hand) getting in there.

The latest ipod classic (7g) is thin like the 5.5g/30GB model.

Edit: Yes I turn off the charge switch when not charging the amp.

if anyone is looking for a great case for their ipod this is the one i have been using for many years it is simply excellent!

the original series is very nice and the tough series is great if you drop the player by accident because it will just bounce around with no  damage.

the white glows in the dark, the black is low key and the clear is kind of clear (lol). it comes with a replaceable window and a belt clip that can be removed and you can use their many different "slide to lock, press to unlock" snap on clips. the dock connector is also protected. they use some kind of rubber that is almost impossible to rip. i cut out a circle where the wheel is because it looks and feels better.

these are their clear cases

Guys, I ordered two of these batteries:

Will report back once I receive them.

2000mA Battery+New Back Cover Upgrade kit replacement for iPod Classic 160GB thin

The guy who is selling them is also has these SSD flash memories and he tells me that they are available from 32gb to 512gb.

the kit seems amazing

the 2000mah should bring up the run time to over 16 hours

the battery is a li-po and not a li-on right? if so be careful dont leave it in a car on a hot day.

MSata will work fine with stock iPod firmware. I have not found any memory capacity limit, and have built two TeraPods. The stock firmware does have a problem with large libraries above 30-40k entries - and the library limit appears to depend on the storage media. The 240gb HD can have libraries with 60k entries, but the SSD and mSata drives have issues with the big libraries. It almost certainly has something to do with the way the stock firmware loads the iTunes.db into RAM, since RB can be configured to avoid this, and thus has no discerable limit to the number of files loaded on the drive. This is why you see so many people have switched to RB for ipods msata and above 256gb.
