Honestly without the RB, I wouldn't be even messing around with these ipods.

Based on my observations of the msata's performance so far with this RB patch, my gut feeling is the ipod 5.5g may well be able to handle a 1 TB drive nicely. I reserve the right to go beyond the 480GB when I am mad.

I can also use the ipod as a portable drive to backup my non music file (got lots of RAW files from another hobby). This is insane.

Now the question is how long these decade-old ipod boards can last, theoretically.

Slightly off topic I know, but do any of you ipod modders know if there's a difference between a 5 and 5.5 gen ipod battery?  I've been running a 5 board without issue but just picked up a 5.5 one to mod and on testing it's sat on the "very low battery" screen for at least 10 minutes and I know the battery is not empty.

The only other issue is the silver ribbon from under the wheel is snapped but if I remember correctly this only affects the wheel?  No point fixing that if there's an issue with the power section..

Thanks for any help :happy_face1:

Scratch all that, seems my battery is flat according to the stock firmware while it still plays fine in rockbox.  Weird, but kinda solves my problem.

Update on the 480GB mSATA:

So far I have dropped about 350GB loads into the drive. No single issue encountered. The drive writes fast and ipod is very responsive. The battery performed well from the few hrs I played the unit.

I can't thank beyondwind enough for this RB patch. It works like a charm. With this mod these ipod 5.5g's are miles ahead of any other daps in terms of reliability and size of storage.

I got my 480gb mSATA today, swapped the 256gb one with it, restored and installed RockBox.

Loading files right now, all looks good!

Maybe we can donate some money to beyondwind for his gift to us and also help him in the development of his mSATA to ZIF adapter.

Yeah I am with you on the donation for his effort and making this available to us. Hopefully he can crack on the ipod classic 7g for the same mod.

Speaking of the adapter card, I actually think it performs very well with this RB patch.

Thanks

I have to travel on business, so the lab has to close for a week. But when I get back I'll start testing the RB Lexar 256g v5.5.

When I tried the 256gb Lexar I had the same issues you had. Even with RockBox, but it would be good for someone else to try.

Have a nice trip and thank you for your contribution to this thread.

The adapter card works fine for now but I was just thinking about the perfect solution, just as we are pursuing the perfect sound here.

Now with the Capless mod on 5G, it can say it will sounds better than any iPOD in the world, I am never a fan of the cirrus DAC on the 7g.

What will be the major improvement comparing with these adapters we are using? Hopefully more power efficient.

With the capless mod, can you say the headphone out will be a clean line out?

Finally I transferred this 480GB mSATA to my capless diymod after refreshing the diymod's firmware with this patch. The card has now been filled 85% full, and I will leave it there for now. It's a great feeling to be able to browse all your favorite music from one single monster drive.

As usual, the capless diymod paired with my capless amp sounds so neutral and transparent and it just blows me away.

most of these mods end up taking less space in the ipod... Wondering why I cant find a modded battery with more mAh's to fill the space?

I've always used the tarkan iflash, but I'm looking to see if I can find an adapter with a smaller footprint. I think I also remember someone forking over $300+ for a 1.3" zif drive to make room for a bigger battery...

There are so many large capacity 3.7v batteries out there. Some that you can pop in and out.

Too bad there isn't a single board with a spot for a CF card and a pop in battery....

Imagine if tarkan or addonics or someone created an easy way to increase efficiency while also doubling mah's!

Hey beyondwind, we would like to help you developing a better mSATA to ZIF adapter by donating some money for your materials an research. Are you cool with that?

Thanks for the encouragement I just setup a donation side bar on my webpage for the MOD.

Right now I am working on an internal head amp board based on TI's TPA6120,  My target is to fit the amp in the gained space from msata mod. The mSATA to ZIF adapter is no longer my priority because the current adapter just seems to be working fine now.

Wow, don't overfill the SSD, iPOD doesn't support TRIM :-)

What kind of battery life you getting with the 480GB mSATA?
