Your experience mimics mine, cmarti. You must make the CF card have one partition before moving forward with the FAT32 and iTunes reformats.

So the 256 GB CF card works fine in mini and 5.5 G after al right? What is the playback time using this card? Now I shall see where I can get this card cheeper, or a 128 GB CF if any of you sell one.

I guess I will not find out until I order another card, but I am positive that the issue was the multiple partitions.

So far I have transferred another 80 gigs of music to the iPod and I am currently listening to Black Sabbath's Vol 4 ALAC album and the iPod behaves perfectly. No hiccups or nothing. smily_headphones1.gif

Next try will be on a Wellcore 512GB CF. My target price will be 99 cents per GB. In order to cut down the price, I will ask Wellcore to slow down the card speed. :)

Can we buy the Wellcore cards in Europe or UK? Hope prices will go down on 256 GB.

Actually the price is very good, they sell for less than half of other 256gb CF cards sell right now.

One thing that threw me off is that I don't have a CF card reader, I had one but of course I mail it to my son thinking I wouldn't needing it anymore...  It would have been so easy if I had the card formatted using the adapter prior to use it on any of the iPods.

Sorry, I cannot confirm the 256GB CF question.  I can confirm that 128GB CF cards work in both the iPod Mini (2nd gen) and the iPod Video (5th gen), the latter with the Tarkan board.  I do remember the "voodoo" having to do with the process of card formatting, though, for every card I tried (32GB, then 64GB, and lastly 128GB):  first get the card to one partition in Windows outside of the iPod, then format to FAT32 using the HP tool DMinor mentioned again outside of the iPod, then put into the iPod and have iTunes under Windows do the last formatting.

Other sequences might work too, but I'll stick to my method as it has given me no trouble.

That was exactly my problem last night, I am kinda mad I didn't do this before using the 256cf card in the iPod mini.  Now I am not willing to remove it of the 7th gen just to try again...

Oh well! I guess I will have to order another Wellcore 256gb CF card... later.

The 7g may be a better candidate for the big card as it has a better battery, 64mb ram and more powerful amp. Let us know how long the battery can last now with the drive swap. Did you have a HDD or CF before swap for this Wellcore?

Interesting question posed to me and I pass it on to you veteran modders to see if you can answer:

If I have my audio on my computer in .wav file format, in compressed folders, can the iPod play those files if in disk mode? I mean, the iPod itself, has a compressed folder full of .wav files, like a PC/Mac desktop?

Also 5.5 gen ipod 80 GB has 64 MB of RAM, and I am not sure about the mini..

How much was the total cost of the card Cmarti? Many thanks.

I didn't had a chance to run it for enough time to know how much the battery last now because the data on it is corrupted. I was transferring music using MediaMonkey and got some errors while transferring and now the iPod shows no music in it. Grrr.. tried to use some tools for the database in it is corrupted. Good news is that I will head to CompUSA today and will get a CF card reader so I can try the properly formatted CF card in the iPod mini.   I really hope the error was because of the USB cable used or MediaMonkey and not something else...

What? Drama again? Man sorry to hear that. It could be the fromat thing. I always run HPUSBDisk to format my cards (using a card reader) before a clean restore.

Last time I also formatted the wellcore this way except it showed only 127GB. But it didn't matter once it's restored and fired in disk mode.

Anyways, my rockboxed 256GB CF has so far given me ZERO hiccups. Of course I have only put it to test on 5g and 5.5g.

I tried to use HPUSBDisk but when I run it it says that the card is write protected, now I am formatting it using EaseUS Partition Master Pro and got a cheap USB card reader of Big Lots for $7.

Will try the card in the iPod mini first. Will keep you all posted.
