When I was working on mine I had a problem finding the right click wheel for it because when you order them from eBay the seller was sending me the click wheel for the 2nd gen mini and the 1st gen mini doesn't even boot with that clickwheel. I ended up ordering a used 1st gen mini clickwheel and removed the white wheel and center button from the new 2nd gen clickwheel that's why the iPod's clickwheel color matched with the color of the aluminum body.

I can take pictures of the the board but I won't do it until I receive the 256gb CF card.

iTunes shows the iPod as it came from factory, pink iPod and gray letters on the clickwheel (only 1st gen iPod has that combination)

thanks the model number was all I needed.

Update!

Got the card two hours ago, installed it in the iPod mini and connected the iPod to iTunes and iTunes takes forever to recognize the iPod and then prompts to restore.

Then it says it is restoring but nothing happens, just stays there. I tried with two different computers and nothing, then I took the 256gb CF card and installed it in the Tarkan adapter and put the adapter in my iPod 7th gen and connected the iPod to iTunes. It restores and works super, was able to transfer one album in ALAC and tested it and listened to some music.

The card works great in the iPod 7th gen, then I took the card which is already formatted to FAT32 and put it back in the iPod mini and same thing. I connect it to the iTunes and it takes forever to be recognized and when finally is recognized and I start the restore process it hangs and fails.

Keep in mind that my iPod mini is the 1st gen one, someone needs to try with a 2nd gen mini.

Sorry it didn't work on the mini. I guess that's why the other head-fi'er also ran into trouble with the 256GB SDXC on mini.

Good news on the 7g. I have a pair of 7g's, and now I know the options. I am sure others are interested having these 256GB CF's in their 7g's as well.

Unfortunately I am having issues with the card, the 7th gen started to freeze and when I connect it to iTunes it goes on a never ending restore loop. Windows wants to format the card but it fails.

I will try now with a 5.5th gen, wish me luck.

Man that sucks. Well you got to have it work on the 5.5g without issues, otherwise you have to return the card. I only tried it on the 5g/5.5g, and works on both flawlessly.

It appears the 5g/5.5g are less fussy than other ipods when it comes to mods. On the restore (reboot) loop, it's a compatibility issue also reported on Tarkan's web site on some cards. I had the same issue when I tried a 128GB Lexar CF 400x with Tarkan on 5g/5.5g. But it's interesting you had the success during your 1st attempt on the restore to the 7g and it was the 2nd attempt which failed. Correct?

BTW, did you reformat the card after you tried on the mini following your initial success on the 7g? If you try the card on your 5.5g, I suggest you reformat the card (using HPUSBDisk.exe) before attempt on the restore.

Another suggestion is to switch to another good ribbon cable (for the 7g) to the CF card and give it another try.

Cmarti, did you try putting the ipod mini into disk mode when doing the mod?

What a shame I belive you cannot install rockbox as it won't let you pass the restore thing right? I am hoping we can find a way to make those cards work on minis. How about the komputerbay 128 GB 600 x that's working in the mini without problems?
Many thanks for photo and for listening smily_headphones1.gif

I tried the komputerbay on my original mini awhil ago. It does work, and it does install rockbox but it is unstable. I do think that I damaged the connector cable so that might have had something to do with it.

Exactly, it worked the first time but I didn't test it for long. Then the menu objects disappeared and when I restarted the iPod it ask me to connect it to iTunes to restore.

No but I will try that.

Yep, swapped the ribbon cable and still same thing. I even installed a 30gb drive and also I put the old 160gb drive back and still same thing.

Yes unable to even boot on official firmware so no Rockbox.  The Komputerbay card worked great when I put it back in the iPod.

Well I have a positive update

After I made my last post and slept five hours and reading davidcotton and DMinor suggestions on formatting I gave the card another chance and put it back on my 5.5th gen iPod.

Then connected the iPod to one of my Windows 7 laptops, then when into control panel/Administrative Tools/create and format partitions and noticed that the card actually had two partitions.

So I put the iPod in disk mode and to my surprise I was able to format it with Windows, then I read Tarkan's suggestion about allowing iTunes to partition and format the new cards and did that. The iPod booted just fine and showed 238gb free storage capacity on both iTunes and the iPod about screen.

Then I said to myself, should I leave it like this and forget about putting it in the 7th gen iPod? (Which was the original plan) I took the chance and removed the Tarkan adapter with the Wellcore card still in it and put it back in the 7th gen iPod and tried again. At first Windows asked me to format the iPod and I cancel that, then run the restore in iTunes and it did it faster than before (I thought that was a good thing) then when that finished the iPod rebooted and iTunes stopped recognizing the iPod. I then rebooted the PC and nothing, funny thing is that I could still get in the iPod menu and navigate through it (No music or media in it yet) So i said "screw this!" I then put it back on disk mode and formatted the iPod with windows.

After doing that and rebooting the iPod iTunes then recognized and iPod in restore mode and I ran it, this time it was a success. So far I have transferred the AC/DC and Ace Frehley discographies in ALAC and MP3 320 format and I am using the iPod in my office rocking to For Those About to Rock we Salute you album :gs1000smile:

One thing for sure is that I will not mess with the card anymore, I will continue to use this iPod as my daily driver and make sure it's stable and I have no issues.

On a non related note I ordered last night an iPod Mini 6gb 2nd gen for $18 in eBay to remove it's internals and put them on the housing of the mini that I currently own.

I have no plan on moving the Wellcore 256gb CF card back to the iPod mini but in all honestly I think the reason it didn't read it was because of the partition issue with CF card. (Same issue across all three iPods.
