Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread - Page 122

Bad News ...... for your wallet

First of all, thanks to cmarti for his suggestion. I did exactly as he suggested and it worked like charm for both Apple's OF and Rockbox. I finally have a 256GB CF DMod Ultimate Edition.

Wow, I am very excited and happy about this try and the results. Now all I need is to drag and drop 240gb's of FLAC's to this damn good sounding DMod. :)

This is installed to a 5g/30GB model and the write speed is around 12MB/s in disk mode thru USB2.

This is the gift which came with the CF card. It has a removable 4gb micro card, USB charge cable, power on/off switch for play/stop.

It doesn't sound bad. Couldn't believe this tiny player can produce this kind of sound.

I also have a 7th gen ipod classic and am planning to install a 256GB drive with a converter.

Did this work for you ?

Is the fit good into the slim 160GB body ?

Also, does anyone know if there is a limit on the ssd you can use ? I've seen relatively good deals on 460GB ssd drives and am very curious if the ipod will be able to read all that space

Just a word of warning that the 7th gen ipods generally do not like the ssd mod.  They seem fine with the tarkan adaptor though.

Most likely 240GB/256GB/480GB/512GB mSATA SSD will ONLY work for iPod Video (i.e. 5.5G) but the stability and heat issues might be a big deal. That might be changed in the future with mSATA-to-ZIF adapters but we never know when that's gonna happen.

Let's say that 256GB CF won't blow up (j/k) in a few days, that should be our best bet for now in terms of costs as well as a stable setup without worrying about getting too hot etc.

Prices of 256GB SDXC cards will only keep dropping, maybe faster than that of 256GB CF cards. In that case, we could have another option

http://www.tarkan.info/20121226/tutorials/ipod-and-sdhc-sdxc-cards

Of course some of us already tried both CF cards and SDXC cards while the former ones seemed to sound better.

So basically I'll start looking for a really cheap iPod Video soon, then ordering that CF card from China and shipping to Hong Kong should take only a few days.

Pretty cool stuff and it's so incredibly affordable to carry well over 200GB of lossless music everywhere we go now. Just awaiting the entire CF card is filled up with files and we'll find out whether 32MB RAM of that iPod 5G is able to handle such huge volume or not.

I now stay away from SDXC cards  as to my ears the CF cards sound the best on my diymods. I actually have a pair of 128GB SDXC's, bought for less than 100 bucks (for 2 cards, used) from Amazon.

Update on the 256GB CF card:

Just dropped 40gb flac's to the card for a test, and it is very responsive and plays flawlessly.

BTW, this CF card is MLC flash based. For those who may not know, the CF cards have two types of flash - SLC and MLC. SLC flash can write many more cycles than the MLC flash. This only matters to those who use the cards for cameras shooting. For us ipod users, this really doesn't matter as we don't write/delete/rewrite crazy like the camera users.

Yeah you can mention but I am not sure if they still offer the so called sample price. Initially they quoted me the $300, then quoted $492 saying the flash price going up. $492 would be a little too much for me to accept. As much as I want it for $200, $300 is not bad considering it actually works. I have noticed it is more responsive than other CF cards I have.

Seeyoutoo, please note that many of your links are to a "CE" drive instead of PATA, which I believe only works with a particular generation.  Just wanted to make sure you were aware of this.

The CF option (and yes I know that you can also use SD cards) is the only one for some of us that also mod the iPod Mini's.

Would the sd to cf adapter be to big for the mini then?
