Wire for 3.5mm to 3.5mm and braid

I'm thinking of making a very very short connection for my zune to cMoy. i have a Fiio L2 currently and its a little long imo. I'm looking for shorter still. I saw 20 AWG silver plated copper and teflon coated 19 strand for about $8 shipped. 25 feet red. Should I get this wire? i was hoping to make a sick braided cable. i have some 10 AWG copper clear coating but its oxidized a bit.

Bottom line:

Will this make a good cable, how many wires, what kind of braid?

I also need to find some decent jacks. idk if gold plated is worth it i heard they just wear out the i/o jacks faster and the plating comes off in months. so if anyone could point me in the direction of affordable jacks. not $50 a peice.

Google or search Amazon for "Neutrik 3.5mm" and you should find the plug you're looking for. It's the one a lot of cable makers use and charge triple digits for (the entire cable). It comes in nickel or black and they're about $8 a piece. BTW, I 'm assuming you meant plugs as opposed to jacks which are holes.

Can you link or be more specific about the wire you mentioned? I'm curious. Thanks!

If you're buying wire specifically for a mini cable, I'd personally go with 24 gauge stranded. The 20 gauge will also work, but will likely not be as flexible as you'd like.

HiGHFLYiN9,

Is this good stuff to solder to?  I read that the solder joint is more important than the wire's conductivity itself, especially for super short runs like this.  Thanks ahead of time!

I'm also trying to find some clear wire for headphones or to replace the red. Anyone know where I can get 24 AWG teflon etc etc? I've checked ebay already.

Or does anyone know where i can get light brown nylon coating to match my Skullcandy Aviators?

The silver plated copper is very easy to solder to, no worries there. And yes, if you have a cold solder joint, it's going to negatively affect the cable no matter what the size.

PercyAudio and PartsConnexion should have clear Teflon tubing. Nylon Multifilament is hard to find in colors other than black. I have been able to source some copper color before, but it's only in larger sizes (think speaker cable or power cable).

@highflying9

I can't find clear silver plated copper at 24 AWG. I was thinking I get the clear and try to find some brown mesh sorta stuff to cover the clear cable and match my Aviators. Do you know where I could get that?

You could check eBay user FurryLetters for a variety of sleeving, or visit the CableOrganizer or Wirecare websites for other options. I don't recall ever seeing silver plated copper with clear dielectric.
